The Detroit Tigers have watched Tarik Skubal from a distance since trading him to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the 2026 deadline, yet the left-hander’s free-agency market is already shaping the club’s offseason outlook.

Detroit drafted him in 2018, developed him into a back-to-back American League Cy Young winner, and then dealt him when long-term talks never progressed.

Now that he is the clear headliner of a thin free-agent class, any sense that his price might settle below the most extreme projections lands as encouraging news for a franchise that has publicly left the door open for a reunion.

In a detailed look at Skubal’s free agency published by ESPN, Alden Gonzalez reported that agent Scott Boras is aiming for the $325 million total secured by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, while some executives have floated the idea of a $400 million deal. O

ne anonymous executive, however, pushed back on the highest numbers.

“The price will be huge, but I don’t think he’s touching 400,” the executive said.

Gonzalez noted that Skubal, now 30 and coming off recent elbow work, is unlikely to land the 12-year length that inflated Yamamoto’s guarantee, and that some clubs already struggle to envision even a 10-year pact.

That assessment does not erase the fact that Skubal remains the most dominant pitcher available; it simply suggests the final number may stay short of the absolute ceiling that has circulated in recent weeks.

For the Tigers, the distinction matters. Owner Chris Ilitch and president of baseball operations Scott Harris have spent the past two seasons building a contender around a strong farm system and selective free-agent additions.

A nine-figure deal for Skubal was always going to be a heavy lift; a contract that falls short of $400 million keeps the possibility more realistic if Detroit decides the pitcher who once expressed a desire to spend his entire career in the city is worth the investment.

Skubal himself has spoken warmly about the organization, the city, and the idea of returning once free agency arrived.

While the Dodgers and Mets are widely viewed as the primary suitors, a moderated price tag expands the circle of teams that can realistically participate, and Detroit has already been mentioned among clubs with genuine interest in bringing him back.

The impending December 1 lockout adds another layer of urgency. Teams that want to lock up the market’s top ace before any potential collective-bargaining changes take effect may move quickly in November.

If the anonymous executive’s caution proves accurate, the Tigers gain a clearer path to re-enter the conversation on terms closer to what their payroll structure can support.

Whether Harris and Ilitch ultimately choose to re-engage remains uncertain, but the early signals from the industry have already shifted the math in a direction that favors the club that first believed in Skubal.
