The Jacksonville Jaguars have been a pretty busy team during the 2024 NFL offseason. They have seen a good amount of turnover on their roster, signing or trading for at least nine players from other teams while at least six players are on the move.
Arguably the biggest loss the Jaguars had was wide receiver Calvin Ridley joining the Tennessee Titans in free agency. They will be looking to replace him with Gabe Davis, who comes over from the Buffalo Bills along with center Mitch Morse.
However, the biggest move that Jacksonville will make this offseason came on Wednesday morning. According to Michael DiRocco of ESPN, the Jaguars and their star pass rusher, Josh Allen, have worked out a monster contract extension.
The two sides have reportedly agreed to a five-year, $150 million contract that includes $88 million guaranteed. The Jaguars had placed the franchise tag on Allen earlier this offseason, which would have paid him $24 million for the 2024 season had a long-term contract not been worked out.
The $30 million that Allen will make on average annually makes him the third highest-paid player in the NFL. Only Nick Bosa, whose extension pays him $34.2 million annually, and Chris Jones, who is paid $31.8 million annually, will be making more.
The 26-year-old was coming into the offseason off the best season in his career. He racked up a franchise-record 17.5 sacks, which was tied for second in the NFL during the 2023 season. That resulted in Allen being named to the second Pro Bowl team of his career.
If there are any people who didn’t believe that Allen was a premier pass rusher in the NFL, his recent production should be enough to change their minds. He ranks in the top 10 of several categories over the last few seasons as he gets after the quarterback as tenaciously as anyone in the league.
With Allen now agreeing to a long-term contract, only two franchise-tagged players remain without contracts; Antoine Winfield Jr. of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals. They will have until July 15th, which is the deadline to work out a long-term deal for franchise-tagged players.
