A viral sideline moment involving Shedeur Sanders during the Cleveland Browns’ recent win over the P

ittsburgh Steelers fueled online speculation that the young quarterback was frustrated watching from the bench. Viewers zeroed in on his expression as Deshaun Watson directed the offense to a 27-24 victory, with some interpreting it as evidence that Sanders was unhappy in a backup role and perhaps even open to a trade.

Yet accounts from inside the organization paint a different picture of his demeanor after the game.

Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reported that the clip failed to capture Sanders’ actual reaction once he returned to the locker room.

“One source said the clip doesn’t reflect how excited Sanders was in the locker room after the game,” Cabot wrote. “On several occasions, Sanders has been the first one to run over to congratulate Watson after a touchdown pass.”

The contrast between the public perception and the private celebration underscored how isolated camera angles can distort the broader context of a player’s attitude.

Cabot further addressed the dynamics among Cleveland’s quarterbacks, who spent the offseason competing under first-year head coach Todd Monken.

“Despite how it’s sometimes been portrayed, the quarterback room is a tight-knit group, and all get along well,” she said. “Last season, Watson mentored Sanders and Dillon Gabriel the entire year, and all grew close. This year, Taylen Green has fit right in, and the energy in the room is good.”

The continuity of those relationships appears to have carried into the current season, even as the depth chart has settled with Watson as the clear starter.

Watson’s performance in Pittsburgh strengthened his hold on the job. He completed 24 of 33 passes for 268 yards with one touchdown and one interception, then orchestrated the late drive that set up Andre Szmyt’s 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds left.

The win improved Cleveland to 3-1 and marked the team’s third consecutive victory, with Watson delivering a go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter of each. Those results have reduced any immediate pressure to alter the offense midstream.

For Sanders, selected in the fifth round of the 2025 draft, that means continued preparation as the primary backup while the Browns evaluate his development under a four-year rookie contract.

Meanwhile, Dillon Gabriel’s recent return to practice has introduced another layer to the quarterback conversation.

Monken opened Gabriel’s three-week practice window after a back injury but indicated there was no rush to activate him, noting the team still had time to assess his recovery and integrate him through individual and scout-team work. Gabriel will not be available for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

As Cleveland seeks a fourth straight win, Sanders remains behind Watson, with the locker-room atmosphere described as collaborative rather than tense. The online narrative around one expression has given way to reports of shared excitement and steady internal relationships.
