In a recent interview with NBA reporter Eric Nehm of The Athletic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, the star player of the Milwaukee Bucks, expressed his frustration with the team’s mindset, stating that he’s “tired” of them feeling sorry for themselves.
Despite holding a respectable record of 35-21, placing them in third position in the Eastern Conference standings, the Bucks have struggled since the coaching change. Under Doc Rivers, who replaced Adrian Griffin, they’ve managed only three wins in ten games.
“Personally, I have to keep on pushing. If I have to talk more in the film sessions like I’ve been doing all year, if I have to f—ing grab the f—ing board and write something down — if I don’t, I don’t know — but you cannot just let opportunities like this go to waste.”
He continued forward, getting more and more fiery as he kept talking.
“I feel like I don’t want to look back and be like, ‘Damn, I had some great teams and I wasn’t able to get over the hump.’ We have to stop feeling bad about ourselves. I’m tired of this. We have to stop doing that. Things are not going to be given to us. We have to go and take it. Like I’ve played with guys that never felt bad about themselves. Came in, did their job, went home, did their job, went home, did their job. That’s what we have to do. We’re not doing it right now, but hopefully we can do it.”
The decision to dismiss Griffin, despite the team’s commendable 30-13 record under his tenure, was reportedly influenced by concerns over the team’s defensive performance, as per sources cited by Hoops Wire.
Antetokounmpo continues to showcase his dominance on the court, averaging impressive stats of 30.8 points, 11.2 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game this season. However, his shooting percentages stand at 61.6% from the field, 25.5% from three-point range, and 65.3% from the free-throw line. Notably, he has racked up 43 double-doubles and seven triple-doubles so far.
Despite their offensive prowess, ranking second in the NBA for points per game with an average of 122.0, the Bucks’ defensive struggles have been evident, ranking 23rd in points allowed per game at 118.8. Their recent losses to the Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies have further highlighted these defensive shortcomings, raising concerns heading into the All-Star break.
