Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is approaching free agency while on the path to recovery from a torn Achilles, yet it seems he has a strong desire to remain loyal to his current team.

In a recent conversation with reporters, Cousins was questioned about his future plans. The seasoned quarterback was asked if he’d entertain the idea of accepting a hometown discount to continue playing for the Vikings, and his response was quite revealing.

He stated, “That’s a great question and one I’ve thought about pretty much my whole 12 years. I do think it’s important to be aware of. I think that God has blessed me financially beyond my wildest dreams. So at this stage in my career, the dollars are really not what it’s about.”

Throughout his career, Cousins has adeptly managed his contract negotiations, amassing an impressive $230 million in earnings over 12 seasons on the field. He demonstrated his flexibility by playing under the franchise tag for two consecutive seasons with the Washington Football Team in 2016 and 2017.

In 2018, Cousins made headlines by signing a groundbreaking three-year, $84 million contract with the Vikings during free agency. This deal was notable for being the NFL’s first fully guaranteed contract and briefly made Cousins the league’s highest-paid player.

Now 35 and in the midst of recovery from a significant injury, Cousins isn’t seeking to set any new contract records. He expressed to reporters that the contractual structure matters more to him than the total dollar amount at this stage of his career.

Prior to his Achilles injury, Kirk Cousins was delivering outstanding performances, accumulating 2,331 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and a mere five interceptions in eight games. Given the Minnesota Vikings’ current lack of a viable replacement for him on their roster, it appears likely that the two parties will come to an agreement to keep Cousins on board.
