Jets Predicted to Make Eye-Popping Head Coach Trade

New York Jets
New York Jets Head Coach, Aaron Glenn suffered another loss, this time to the previously winless, Miami Dolphins, Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, at East Rutherford.

The New York Jets find themselves staring at yet another crossroads under owner Woody Johnson, with Aaron Glenn’s tenure looking increasingly precarious after a 2-6 start that has the franchise on pace for another lost season.

While an in-season firing remains unlikely according to multiple reports, the long-term fit is already under scrutiny. Into that vacuum has stepped a surprising name: Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, floated by NFL insider Benjamin Allbright as a potential acquisition “via trade.”

For a Jets organization that has cycled through defensive-minded coaches with little sustained success, the appeal is obvious.

O’Connell built his reputation as an offensive play-caller who has guided the Vikings to a 49-26 record since taking over in 2022, including multiple double-digit win seasons and a current 6-1 mark that has Minnesota atop the NFC North.

The Jets, by contrast, have hired only one offensive-oriented head coach during Johnson’s long ownership—Adam Gase—and the results speak for themselves.

Pairing an established winner who understands modern quarterback play with the young talent and draft capital the Jets are stockpiling could finally shift the franchise’s identity away from perpetual rebuilds.

The personal connections only strengthen the case. O’Connell spent the bulk of his brief NFL quarterback career with the Jets, and he shares a college history at San Diego State with current general manager Darren Mougey.

Earlier this year, O’Connell publicly praised Mougey’s preparation and willingness to make difficult decisions, calling the organization “in good hands.” That mutual respect could ease what would otherwise be an awkward transition.

Any deal would not come cheap. O’Connell signed a multi-year extension in early 2025, meaning the Jets would have to surrender meaningful draft compensation—something they can afford given their projected surplus of high picks in 2027.

The risk is real: Minnesota has little incentive to part with a coach who has delivered consistent winning, even if defensive coordinator Brian Flores sits as a ready-made internal option.

Yet for a Jets franchise that has repeatedly botched coaching searches, trading for a known quantity rather than rolling the dice on another unproven coordinator might represent the most pragmatic path available.

Whether the Vikings would ever entertain such a move remains speculative, but the mere discussion highlights how far the Jets still sit from contention.

If Glenn cannot reverse course over the final stretch of the season, ownership will face a choice between another reset or a bold pursuit of a proven offensive architect who already knows the building.

In a league where stable, winning leadership has eluded them for more than a decade, that conversation is one the Jets can no longer afford to ignore.
