Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark recently addressed the media for the first time following a high-profile on-court incident involving Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, calling for a broader perspective on women’s basketball.

During the Fever’s practice on July 3, Clark reflected on the intense media coverage and public discourse surrounding the play from their June 24 matchup.

She acknowledged the need to discuss whether the contact warranted a flagrant foul but criticized how the narrative had dominated conversations for days afterward, overshadowing other compelling aspects of the league.

“It’s really interesting to me, because I turn the TV on on Sunday, and that game was on Wednesday, and that’s all people are still talking about,” Clark said. “And I feel like that’s just a real disservice to our league.

“And I get it. You have to talk about it. You talk about whether it’s flagrant; you talk about whatever it is. But to continue to beat down, beat down, and then for the narrative to be taken [in] other places, that’s really just not acceptable. I think it’s hard to see.”

She emphasized that while analyzing the specific incident has value, the relentless focus and shifting narratives can detract from the bigger picture.

Clark expressed empathy for players across the league who were competing in games during that period, noting that the spotlight on the controversy made it harder for their performances to receive attention.

She also highlighted her own teammates’ strong showing in a dominant win without her on the court, which largely went undiscussed amid the frenzy.

The Fever guard stressed the abundance of elite talent throughout the WNBA and advocated for redirecting energy toward celebrating on-court excellence.

“There’s so much amazing talent, and there are so many amazing players that are playing at an incredibly high rate,” she noted.

Clark believes that collectively refocusing the conversation will benefit the league’s continued growth and visibility.

The play in question occurred during a scramble for the ball, where Thomas made contact with Clark in the neck/throat area while both were on the floor. Officials did not call a foul in real time, but the league reviewed it post-game and issued Thomas a Flagrant 2 foul along with a one-game suspension.

Thomas later described the contact as unintentional and expressed frustration over the intense backlash she and her team faced, including death threats and abusive messages. Clark has previously condemned such toxicity directed at any players.

Clark is averaging 21.2 points, 8.2 assists and four rebounds per game this season. She was just named a starter in the WNBA All-Star Game.
