The Minnesota Timberwolves have a huge obstacle in front of them. They entered Tuesday night’s game against the Dallas Mavericks down 3-0 in the Western Conference Finals. No team in NBA history has ever come back from that deficit, but Karl-Anthony Towns made sure his team would at least complete the first step in the comeback.

Minnesota ground out a hard-fought victory in Game 4, winning 105-100. Karl-Anthony Towns was off to a brutal start, having one of the worst shooting stretches in NBA Playoffs history. But, he was able to break out of his slump to help the team avoid elimination.

Towns shot 9-of-13 from the field overall and 4-of-5 from 3-point range for 25 points. He scored 10 of those in the fourth quarter, helping the Timberwolves close out the game strongly and hold on for victory after several late-game collapses in the series.

“Everything came together for him; he was super confident,” Anthony Edwards said as he intercepted a question for Towns about what he did differently. “He played exceptionally well, and he came through big-time. He was the reason we won tonight.”

Entering Game 4, Karl-Anthony Towns was shooting a ghastly 27.8 percent from the field, going 15-of-54 overall. From 3-point range he was frigid, making only 3-of-23 attempts for 13 percent.

He was benched for a long stretch in Game 2 because of his struggles, but he didn’t let that negatively impact him. As Edwards shared, Towns’ confidence remained high despite the struggles and he broke out in a big way on Tuesday night.

Timberwolves fans were certainly relieved to see their star duo step up to avoid elimination. Along with Towns, Edwards scored a game-high 29 points, as both players recorded double-doubles with 10 rebounds apiece.

It was a flip of the script, as the Mavericks’ star duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, who had previously dominated, struggled. They combined to shoot 13-of-39 from the field and 5-of-16 from 3-point range, leading to the first loss in a closeout game in Irving’s career.

The series will now shift back to Minnesota for Game 5 on Thursday night. The Timberwolves will look to avoid elimination for at least one more game, hoping to make NBA history.
