The Milwaukee Brewers closed a series against the Texas Rangers by taking two of three games before dropping the finale 7-4. That result sent them into an important stretch against the Chicago Cubs with an eight-game lead in the National League Central, a cushion they will try to protect or widen at Wrigley Field.
While the big-league club prepared for that rivalry series, the organization made a quieter but meaningful move in the minors by promoting left-hander Wande Torres from High-A Wisconsin to Double-A Biloxi.
Torres is only 21, a 6-foot-3 southpaw signed out of San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic in June 2022. He has already skipped some of the usual developmental steps.
After time in the Dominican Summer League and a full season as a starter at Low-A Carolina in 2025, he opened 2026 with the Timber Rattlers. The overall numbers there were solid if unspectacular: a 9-5 record, 4.15 ERA and 126 strikeouts across 24 appearances. What changed the conversation was how he finished.
In five August outings, he went 3-0 with a 1.75 ERA and 33 strikeouts. His last two appearances included a scoreless four-inning outing and a start in which he allowed no runs on three hits while striking out eight.
Those results, plus a July that earned him Brewers minor-league pitcher of the month honors, made the jump to Double-A a logical next test.
The promotion is not a major-league call-up. Torres has never pitched at Double-A, and Biloxi will present a steeper challenge against older, more polished hitters. Still, the timing is notable.
Milwaukee’s farm system has produced several young arms in recent years, and the club has shown a willingness to move pitchers aggressively when the stuff and results align. Torres’ fastball has touched the upper 90s from the left side, and he has shown the ability to miss bats while inducing ground balls.
Control has been a work in progress at times, but the recent stretch suggested he is gaining a better feel for locating his pitches.
For the Brewers, the move is less about immediate help in Chicago than about continuing to develop depth. Milwaukee sits at 85-52 and is in strong position to claim another NL Central title, with the Cubs eight games back.
The farm system’s job is to keep feeding the pipeline so that injuries or September roster expansion do not leave the club short. Torres now gets his first look at Double-A hitters with several weeks left in the minor-league season. How he handles that assignment will determine whether he remains a name to watch for 2027 or becomes a more immediate option if Milwaukee needs another arm later this year.
For a 21-year-old who has already climbed several levels since signing four years ago, the next test is simply to keep throwing strikes and missing bats in Biloxi.
