As the San Diego Padres hope to contend in the National League this season, they recently have expressed an interest in bolstering their starting rotation.
Despite trading Juan Soto to the New York Yankees in the offseason, the San Diego Padres are having a fairly decent start to the season with a record right around .500. Even though they moved on from Soto, the Padres still have a lot of talented players on the team, as they have gone on a bit of a spending spree in recent years.
Since the franchise has a desire to win, it looks like they are focusing on being buyers this season. Recently, it was reported that the Padres had an interest in Chicago White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet.
Because they’ve never seen a problem that can’t be solved with a trade, the San Diego Padres “have recently shown strong interest” in Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet, according to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal.
With the White Sox being the worst team in baseball, they will likely be getting a lot of calls from teams inquiring about their players. While Crochet is on the younger side, winning in Chicago feels like a long way away, and continuing to stockpile prospects makes sense.
This season, Crochet has pitched well despite being on the worst team in baseball, as he has a 5-5 record and an ERA under 4.00. Since Crochet hasn’t had to be paid yet, the White Sox could likely get a pretty good haul for him, with him being under team control for a few more years.
The San Diego Padres pursuing pitching makes a lot of sense with Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove both injured. However, this is a team that has sent away a lot of prospects in recent years and while Crochet could help them win for the next few years, it would come at a steep price.
As we approach the summer, it will be interesting to monitor what the Padres do depending on how their record looks in the coming weeks.
