Dabo Swinney spent much of August telling anyone who would listen that Clemson had no starters. As the Tigers prepare to open the 2026 season at LSU on Saturday, he is still holding to that line even as he begins to put names on the field.
Speaking to reporters this week, Swinney said, “In my mind, we still don’t have any starters. Now, we’re gonna run some guys out there Saturday (vs. LSU). And then we’ll start to make some decisions, because we’ll have some performance.”
The comment fits a theme he has repeated since the first day of fall camp, when he declared that nobody owned a job and that players would earn their place one practice at a time.
Christopher Vizzina has largely been identified as the quarterback who will take the first snaps in Baton Rouge, even if Swinney refuses to publicly confirm it. The fourth-year player waited behind Cade Klubnik and made only one career start before this season.
Swinney has also made clear that freshman Tait Reynolds has the ability play, which leaves Vizzina with little room for error in a hostile environment. The rest of the lineup remains fluid.
After a year that ended 7-6 and produced only one College Football Playoff appearance in the last five seasons, Swinney has treated camp as an open competition rather than a coronation of returning veterans.
That approach reflects both necessity and philosophy. Clemson lost significant production to the NFL and the transfer portal and chose not to reload heavily through the portal itself. Swinney has long preferred to develop players already on campus. The result is a younger, less experienced roster facing an LSU team coached by Lane Kiffin in his first season in Baton Rouge. Both programs arrive with questions, but Clemson’s questions start at the top of the depth chart.
The schedule after LSU offers some breathing room. Miami is the only other ranked opponent on the slate and visits Death Valley later in the year.
A strong start would put the Tigers in position to chase a 10-win season and a playoff berth. A poor one would deepen the frustration that has grown among fans who remember the championship years and now see a program that has not kept pace with the NIL era.
Swinney remains one of only two active coaches with multiple national titles. That résumé still buys him time, but the clock is no longer unlimited. He has spent the last month telling his players they are nobodies until they prove otherwise.
On Saturday night in Tiger Stadium, they will have their first chance to become somebodies.
How they respond will shape both the season and the conversation around the coach who still refuses to call anyone a starter.
