The Chicago Cubs have taken action to strengthen their pitching resources amid a challenging stretch of injuries affecting both their starting rotation and bullpen. On Thursday, the team executed a trade with the Athletics to bring in additional depth.

The Athletics made the official announcement regarding the transaction involving right-handed pitcher Tyler Ferguson. This move comes as Chicago looks to manage an increasingly thin pitching group.

“The A’s have traded RHP Tyler Ferguson to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations,” the Athletics announced.

The Athletics had designated Ferguson for assignment earlier this season after he appeared in just one game. The Cubs moved quickly to claim the experienced reliever and add him to their organization.

In his single outing this year on May 5 versus the Philadelphia Phillies, Ferguson tossed 1.1 innings but surrendered four runs. While that performance was not ideal, his track record from previous seasons suggests he could provide valuable innings out of the bullpen.

Ferguson was originally drafted by the Texas Rangers in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. However, it took him until 2024 to reach the major leagues, where he made his debut with the Athletics organization.

During his rookie campaign in 2024, the right-hander posted a solid 4-2 record along with a 3.68 ERA across 48 appearances. In the following season, he appeared in 56 games, finishing with an identical 4-2 record but a 4.66 ERA.

The addition of Ferguson is expected to deliver much-needed pitching depth for the Cubs as they navigate multiple setbacks within their staff. With several key arms currently sidelined, this acquisition offers a practical reinforcement option.

Chicago recently revealed that starter Matthew Boyd will miss multiple weeks after sustaining a left meniscus injury. The injury occurred during an off-field incident while spending time with his children.

Compounding the rotation concerns, left-hander Justin Steele experienced a setback in his recovery from elbow surgery, pushing his potential return to the second half of the season. Meanwhile, promising pitcher Cade Horton required season-ending surgery.

Further adding to the injury list, Jordan Wicks remains on the injured list due to a left forearm problem and has faced difficulties during his rehabilitation appearances. Top prospect Jaxon Wiggins is also currently sidelined in the minor leagues with his own injury.

Despite the significant absences in their pitching department, the Cubs have shown impressive resilience. The team currently sits at 26-12 and holds first place in the NL Central division.

This trade for Ferguson highlights Chicago’s proactive approach to maintaining competitiveness. As the season progresses, the right-hander will look to contribute stability to a bullpen that has been tested by ongoing injuries.
