Penn State football enters a new era under Matt Campbell, and the first-year coach said he is eager to see how his team handles the opening test of the season.
The Nittany Lions open at home against Marshall, a game Campbell described as an early measuring stick after taking over a program that parted ways with James Franklin.
Campbell arrived from Iowa State with a reputation for building competitive teams in a tough conference. He now faces the task of blending his system with a roster still adjusting to new leadership.
The Big Ten remains stacked, and few observers claim to know exactly what Penn State will look like once the games begin. Campbell said that uncertainty is part of what makes the first weekend appealing.
“I think there’s so much we’re going to learn about ourselves. First games are challenging, no matter if you’ve been there for 10 years or if this is your first time around. I think first games of the season are always tricky and always challenging. I’m excited to get into this moment because it’s going to tell us a lot more where we need to continue to grow forward to, with a big challenge at hand on top of it,” Campbell said.
Those words capture the mood around the program: curiosity mixed with a desire to start fast in front of the Beaver Stadium crowd.
Quarterback Rocco Becht followed Campbell from Ames and gives the offense an experienced arm. Last season he appeared in 12 games for Iowa State and threw for 2,584 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Two seasons earlier he produced 3,505 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions, numbers that showed what he can do when healthy and in rhythm.
Becht said he is focused on consistency rather than past production.
“I feel like I have more to prove to myself, to go out there and do my job day in and day out, each game,” Becht said. “I feel healthy, a 100% again, so I feel like I’m back to my 2024 self and I just want to go out there and play ball and win a lot of games for this program.”
If Becht stays available, Penn State’s offense should have a chance to keep games competitive even against stronger Big Ten opponents later in the schedule.
Campbell has emphasized taking the season one week at a time. He wants the team to process each situation as it comes rather than looking ahead to conference races or bowl possibilities.
That approach fits a roster still learning the new staff’s expectations on both sides of the ball. Practices have focused on communication and reacting to what the opponent presents.
The Marshall game will offer the first public look at how those lessons translate. Campbell noted that opening games often expose areas that film study and spring work cannot fully reveal.
Penn State supporters hope the combination of a new coach and a familiar quarterback produces a more resilient team than recent seasons delivered. Campbell has not promised immediate results, only that the group will keep working through whatever the first test shows.
The Nittany Lions will find out soon enough whether the early excitement matches the product on the field. For now, Campbell and Becht both sound ready to begin that process in Happy Valley.
