The Boston Red Sox optioned right-hander Wyatt Olds to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, clearing a roster spot for reliever Tyron Guerrero’s return from the 15-day injured list, via the MLB transaction log.
The move is a roster crunch, not a performance demotion — and that is what makes it surprising.
Olds, 27, has been one of the more pleasant late-season stories in Boston.
A seventh-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2021, he spent years as a high-strikeout, high-walk minor-league reliever before finally reaching Fenway on Aug. 17. In 13 major-league appearances he is 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA over 15 innings, 20 strikeouts, and a 1.20 WHIP. He allowed only two earned runs all year in the big leagues.
His first stint was especially clean: six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts after his mid-August call-up. Optioned Aug. 29 when Garrett Whitlock came off the IL, he was back Sept. 1 after Guerrero landed on the shelf with shoulder inflammation. He kept producing, including a win against Texas on Sept. 17.
A short, walk-heavy appearance against Tampa Bay on Friday night (one-third of an inning, two walks, one strikeout) was his last work before Sunday’s transaction.
That big-league success sits in contrast with a 5.33 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings at Worcester earlier this season. Command has always been the question.
Olds throws a mid-to-upper-90s four-seamer and a sharp slider that generates swings and misses, but walks and hit batters have followed him through the system.
In the majors, he tightened that enough to post an ERA+ well above 300 in a small sample.
Guerrero’s activation is the practical reason. With September rosters still limited and Boston trying to stabilize a bullpen that has leaned on mix-and-match arms, the club chose the veteran coming off injury over the rookie who still has options remaining.
Olds can be recalled again without 40-man complications if another arm is needed in the final week or in October.
For a pitcher who waited six professional seasons for his first big-league inning, the shuttle is familiar. It is also a reminder that September roster math often overrides recent results.
Olds earned another look. Worcester is simply where the extra arm goes until the next injury or rest day opens a door.
If the Red Sox need a fresh high-velocity look down the stretch, he has already shown he can handle it.
