The Detroit Tigers have parted ways with outfielder Michael Siani, who elected free agency after spending the final weeks of the 2026 season at Triple-A Toledo.
Siani joined the organization on a minor-league contract in mid-August but never appeared in a game for the major-league club. He leaves as a free agent following a brief stay with the Mud Hens.
In 18 games with Toledo, the left-handed hitter batted .140 with two home runs and five runs batted in. He also stole two bases during that stretch.
The Tigers finished the regular season with a 76-86 record and fourth place in the American League Central. Their offseason roster moves have already begun as they look to improve after missing the postseason.
Siani, 27, brings five seasons of major-league experience despite limited overall production at the plate. Across 161 games with the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals and Baltimore Orioles, he has hit .220 with two home runs and 20 runs batted in.
His best big-league stretch came in 2024 with the Cardinals. That year he appeared in 124 games, batting .228 with two home runs, 20 runs batted in and 20 stolen bases while posting a .570 OPS.
He saw far less action the following season, playing in 19 games for St. Louis and hitting .235. In 2026 he appeared in just one game for the Orioles, going 0-for-1 at the plate.
Siani has long been valued more for his defense and speed than his bat. Teams have viewed him as a capable center fielder who can cover ground and provide late-inning or bench contributions.
Before reaching Detroit, he spent time in the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees organizations early in 2026. Baltimore claimed him off waivers in May, then later designated him for assignment after a short call-up.
He cleared waivers and remained in the Orioles’ system for a period before the club released him in early August. The Tigers signed him shortly afterward to add outfield depth amid injuries to other players.
His offensive numbers in the minors this season were modest overall. Combined Triple-A work prior to joining Toledo produced a low batting average and limited extra-base production.
Siani was originally drafted by the Reds in the fourth round of the 2018 draft out of high school in Pennsylvania. He made his major-league debut in September 2022 and has bounced between organizations since then.
With free agency now open, he will look for another opportunity as a depth outfielder. Clubs seeking defensive help and baserunning speed could consider him for a minor-league or non-roster invite deal heading into 2027.
The Tigers’ decision to move on comes as part of a broader set of roster adjustments after a disappointing year. Several other players also became free agents or were released around the same time.
Siani’s career slash line of .220/.276/.270 reflects the challenges he has faced generating consistent offense at the highest level. Still, his track record of solid glove work keeps him in the conversation for teams needing organizational outfielders.
