Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George is currently deliberating his treatment options for persistent groin and knee injuries, which may include surgery, amid a challenging first season with the team.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that George is consulting with medical experts. A decision regarding his potential return this season is expected early next week.

George, who has struggled with multiple injuries this season, including a hyperextended knee and a lingering groin issue, has been sidelined since the Sixers’ March 4 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

During that game, he managed just seven points on 3-for-11 shooting, alongside seven rebounds and six assists. This season, the 34-year-old has averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists over 41 games, marking one of his lowest outputs in recent years.

The Sixers’ medical team closely monitors George’s condition and is scheduled to re-evaluate him before Friday’s game against the Indiana Pacers. His treatment and recovery plan will be critical in determining his availability for the remainder of the season and possibly his future with the team.

The Sixers, languishing at 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 22-43 record, have been plagued by injuries across their roster. With the 2022-23 MVP Joel Embiid and several others, like Eric Gordon and Jared McCain, also out for the season, the team’s focus has inevitably shifted toward improving its draft lottery odds.

According to Tankathon, Philadelphia has a 9.8 percent chance of securing the No. 1 pick and a 39.5 percent likelihood of landing a top-four pick.

Given the team’s dire standings and diminishing playoff hopes, a segment of the fanbase and some analysts suggest that the organization may benefit from shutting George down for the season.

This would allow the team to focus on rebuilding and potentially securing a high draft pick, which could be used to select top prospects like Duke’s Cooper Flagg, Rutgers’ Ace Bailey, or Dylan Harper.

This challenging situation puts the 76ers’ front office in a precarious position as they navigate the remainder of the season and plan for the future.

The potential decisions made in the coming weeks regarding Paul George’s health and the team’s strategic direction could have significant implications for the Sixers’ trajectory in the years to come.
