The Kansas City Chiefs are the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Looking to make history and win for a third consecutive year, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has given some insight into what the team is going to do differently on offense.
One area that the team wanted to emphasize this offseason was big plays on offense. As long as Patrick Mahomes is under center, the Chiefs are going to produce at a high level. But, there were some struggles last season creating big plays as the supporting cast wasn’t where it needed to be.
Thus far this offseason, head coach Andy Reid has been encouraging Patrick Mahomes to let the ball fly, pushing the ball down the field more. We should see more of it, as the Chiefs now have the personnel to attack deep.
“If I don’t, he throws little jabs at me like, ‘Oh, you want to throw the checkdown here?”’ Mahomes said as the Chiefs concluded their offseason practices. “I’m like, ‘I got you, Coach; we’re going to push it.’ It has been fun.”
While the availability of Rashee Rice is currently up in the air, Kansas City did upgrade at wide receiver. They signed speedster Marquise Brown in free agency and used their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Xavier Worthy, who recorded the fastest 40-yard dash time ever.
Along with tight end Travis Kelce, the Chiefs look to have more than enough weapons in the passing game to give opponents fits. They were able to find success last season with an underwhelming wide receiver group and addressed that weakness in the offseason.
In addition to the upgraded supporting cast, Patrick Mahomes revealed he has gotten better at putting bad plays behind him. Going up against the team’s stout defense has enabled him to learn to move on to the next play.
“This is probably the most comfortable I think I’ve felt of just being able to not let something affect me,” he said. “When you go up against [Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo in practice], you’re not going to be right 100% of the time, and there’s been times where I’ve lost on blitzes and Spags gets me with the new pressure that he’s working on, and I think it’s just being able to get the ball out of my hand, get it to the checkdown or wherever that is and then live to play another play.”
Finding a weakness in this Chiefs’ offense or Patrick Mahomes is not easy. It looks like they will be even more dangerous in 2024 with the two-time MVP taking more steps in his development and the roster remaining one of the best in the NFL.
