The exclusion of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from the 2025-26 College Football Playoff has intensified discussions about the long-term plans of head coach Marcus Freeman. After a strong regular season that ended with a 10-2 record, the Irish were narrowly left out of the expanded playoff field, prompting questions about the program’s direction moving forward.

Whispers connecting Freeman to various coaching vacancies have grown louder in recent weeks. While he has been mentioned in connection with several college positions, sources indicate that Freeman is unlikely to depart Notre Dame for another university role, except perhaps his alma mater, Ohio State. The professional ranks, however, present a different scenario altogether.

Reports suggest that Freeman has shown openness to opportunities in the NFL. As the league’s coaching carousel begins to turn with the conclusion of the regular season, multiple franchises are monitoring his situation closely. The possibility of him transitioning to the pros represents a significant concern for Notre Dame supporters.

A departure to the NFL could deliver a major setback to the Irish program, which has enjoyed stability and success under Freeman’s leadership. His ability to recruit top talent and develop players has positioned Notre Dame as a consistent contender in recent years.

Adding fuel to the speculation, an established NFL reporter has provided fresh insights into Freeman’s prospects.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler offered details on the growing buzz surrounding the coach and highlighted specific teams conducting due diligence.

“Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman’s name has been heavily circulated in recent weeks. Here’s what I know. Yes, the Giants are expected to have interest in him when the carousel kicks off. But the Titans have done their research, too,” Fowler wrote.

“And so have a few teams that will either have an opening or potentially could have one. No teams have officially requested to speak with Freeman as of the last time I checked, but if Freeman wants to at least explore the possibility of the NFL via conversations with teams, he will have opportunities to do that. Freeman will take the next few weeks to make that decision.”

Since assuming full control of the Notre Dame program in late 2021, Freeman has compiled an impressive 43-12 overall mark. His tenure includes guiding the team to a national title game appearance in the previous season, where they ultimately fell short against Ohio State.

If Freeman elects to remain with the Irish, the outlook remains bright for another competitive campaign. The program boasts a talented roster and strong recruiting momentum, setting the stage for potential success in the coming year.

As the NFL offseason approaches, additional developments regarding Freeman are anticipated. With the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans already linked, along with other potential suitors, the next few weeks could bring clarity to one of college football’s biggest storylines.

Notre Dame fans will be watching closely for any indications of his final choice.
