Heading into the 2024 MLB season, there were some concerns about the New York Yankees pitching staff. Reigning Cy Young award winner Gerrit Cole was going to begin the season on the sidelines after suffering an injury in Spring Training.
Without their ace, people wondered whether there was enough depth to pick up the slack. To acquire Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres, the Yankees traded away several pitchers who would have been relied upon to help offset the loss of Cole.
Not only have the New York Yankees survived not having Cole in the mix, but their starting pitchers have thrived. New York has the best team ERA in baseball and their starting rotation is in the midst of a historic stretch.
As shared by Sarah Langs on X, via Elias Sports, the New York Yankees starting pitchers have gone 5+ innings while allowing 2 or fewer runs in 15 straight starts. That is the longest streak in MLB history since the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893.

To this point, the New York Yankees are 37-19. They are one game behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the best record in baseball and their pitching staff is a major reason why. No matter who is taking the mound for the Bronx Bombers, they are finding success.
Currently, Nestor Cortes holds the highest ERA among the team’s starting pitchers with a 3.30. The rest of the staff, Marcus Stroman, Carlos Rodon, Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil, are all below 3.00; Gil leads the way at 2.11. Cortes is also the only one with a losing record; everyone else has won at least 62.5 percent of their starts.
The only other player to start a game for the New York Yankees this season other than those five is Cody Poteet, He was also excellent, going six innings against the Cleveland Guardians in and allowing only one run in an 8-2 win.
