Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson, averaging 19.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists this season, is considered one of the top NBA trade targets on the market as the midseason deadline looms. According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Cleveland Cavaliers could pursue a trade for Johnson ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
The Cavaliers, who lead the NBA with a 31-4 record, could send Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, and draft capital to Brooklyn in exchange for Johnson and rookie Maxwell Lewis. Johnson’s ability to play a complementary role and his long-term contract make him an attractive addition to Cleveland, which has championship aspirations.
Multiple NBA Teams Eyeing Cam Johnson
While Cleveland is a top suitor, Johnson has also drawn interest from teams other than the Cavaliers. NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Sacramento Kings are potential trade partners for the Nets, making him a hot name to monitor in rumors.
Stein reported that the Grizzlies are “frequently mentioned” by league sources as a potential landing spot for Johnson. However, their interest may have cooled after the Nets dealt Dorian Finney-Smith to the Los Angeles Lakers instead of Memphis.
Stein called the Pacers “a team to watch” in Johnson trade discussions and confirmed that the Kings have engaged in talks with the Nets, which has kept these teams as a focus of NBA trade rumors since.
Nets beat writer Brian Lewis of the New York Post noted that some trade rumors surrounding Johnson involve multi-team scenarios, but a Brooklyn source told Lewis the reports are “all noise.”
Brooklyn Nets’ Rebuilding Focus
At 13-25, the Nets are continuing their rebuilding process, which began last summer when they traded Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks for five first-round picks and additional assets. Nets general manager Sean Marks has prioritized accumulating draft capital to build for the future, making them a key seller at the NBA trade deadline to keep tabs on.
Marks recently traded Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton to the Lakers for D’Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis, and three second-round picks. After the trade, Marks reiterated the team’s focus on “long-term, sustainable success.”
NBA Trade Market Outlook
Johnson’s versatility as a scorer and defender has made him a hot commodity on the trade market. The Cavaliers, Pacers, Grizzlies, and Kings all see Johnson as a potential difference-maker, but Brooklyn holds leverage in determining the best offer.
As the trade deadline approaches, Johnson’s future remains uncertain. Whether he joins a contender like Cleveland or another team looking to bolster its roster, his name will likely dominate trade discussions in the coming weeks.
