Knicks Hit With Bad Mitchell Robinson News Before Free Agency

Mitchell Robinson’s lengthy tenure with the New York Knicks seems to be reaching a conclusion after eight seasons. The veteran center, once a cornerstone of the franchise’s rebuild, now faces an uncertain future as the team navigates tight financial constraints under the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement.

Recent developments indicate that a return to Madison Square Garden is becoming increasingly improbable for the 28-year-old big man.

Just days after various reports linked Robinson to several interested free-agent destinations, New York Post Knicks insider Stefan Bondy delivered a pointed update. According to Bondy, the organization is steering away from bringing the player back for the upcoming campaign.

“Heard it’s unlikely Mitchell Robinson will be back with Knicks next season,” Bondy wrote on X. “He’s longest tenured Knick but also an unrestricted free agent. Owner James Dolan said he’s unwilling to pay into second apron so running it back with bench is not feasible.”

This assessment aligns with the Knicks’ strategic decisions throughout the recent draft period. New York opted to trade out of the first round entirely, focusing instead on second-round selections of German guard Jack Kayil and Vanderbilt wing Tyler Nickel. The team also acquired an additional future second-round pick from the Sacramento Kings in 2029.

These roster maneuvers reflect a deliberate effort to maintain flexibility and control salary commitments. By adding only limited guaranteed money, the Knicks preserved assets while avoiding deeper luxury tax penalties. The approach underscores owner James Dolan’s firm stance against operating above the second apron, a threshold that imposes significant restrictions on future roster construction and player acquisitions.

Bondy’s reporting positions Robinson as potentially the most notable victim of these budgetary realities. As the longest-tenured member of the current Knicks squad, his departure would mark the end of an era for a player who has been through the franchise’s highs and lows.

Interest in Robinson has been building across the league for some time.

During the postseason, SNY’s Ian Begley highlighted “numerous suitors” for the center, with at least one franchise ready to offer him a starting position. That kind of opportunity could prove attractive for Robinson, who began his Knicks career as the primary starter at center before yielding that spot following the acquisition of Karl-Anthony Towns in 2024.

Even in a backup capacity throughout the championship run, Robinson delivered consistent value. His elite rim protection, ability to crash the offensive glass, and overall defensive presence frequently shifted momentum in critical playoff moments, including matchups in the NBA Finals against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.

The Sacramento Kings emerge as a particularly intriguing possibility among potential landing spots. Led by general manager Scott Perry—the same executive who originally drafted Robinson 36th overall in 2018—the Kings share a longstanding personal connection with the center. That history could facilitate a smooth transition if Robinson chooses to depart New York in free agency.

As the offseason progresses, attention will turn to how free agency unfolds for one of the league’s most respected interior defenders. While his contributions helped elevate the Knicks to defending champions, current financial priorities suggest his next chapter will likely unfold elsewhere.

Fans and observers alike will be watching closely to see where Robinson’s skills land next.
