Ski enthusiasts in South America are buzzing with excitement after a powerful winter storm swept through the Andes over the weekend, dumping incredible amounts of fresh snow across the mountains.
What started as a challenging early season has suddenly turned into a dream scenario for many resorts in Chile and Argentina.
One of the standout performers was Chile’s Portillo ski area, which found itself temporarily closed for safety as the storm raged. In just three days, it recorded a staggering 309 centimeters—more than 10 feet—of snow.
At one point during the peak on Friday and Saturday, over a metre and a half fell in a single 24-hour period. That kind of accumulation is enough to completely reshape the landscape and bury everything in sight under a thick, pristine blanket.
Nearby, Valle Nevado also got hammered with around 1.7 meters (nearly six feet) of new snow.
The resort even shared striking before-and-after images showing the dramatic transformation, captured from their webcam. It’s the kind of heavy snowfall that turns ordinary slopes into a skier’s paradise—provided you can actually get out there safely.
The storm has brought its share of challenges too. Many resorts across the region are currently isolated because roads are blocked, and crews are working hard to dig out lifts and make the terrain safe again.
For now, the priority is keeping everyone secure while nature does its thing. It’s a reminder that while big snow is thrilling, it can also bring logistical headaches in these rugged mountain environments.
This deluge marks a huge turnaround for South American ski areas. The 2026 season got off to a slow start, with most places struggling to open much terrain after receiving less than 50 centimetres of snow over the previous few months.
Now, after one epic weekend, the mountains look entirely different, and the outlook has brightened considerably.
Forecasters say there should be a short break in the snowfall before another weather system moves in around Tuesday, potentially adding even more to the bounty.
