Given how the 2023 NFL season ended for the Dallas Cowboys, many people were expecting fireworks during the 2024 NFL offseason. The Cowboys became the first team in NFL history to lose to a No. 7 seed in the playoffs, getting blown out of AT&T Stadium by the Green Bay Packers during Super Wild Card Weekend.
Despite the loss, Jerry Jones didn’t go scorched Earth on the franchise. This was a very quiet offseason for the Dallas Cowboys, who didn’t make many moves during free agency. The only veteran they signed from another team was linebacker Eric Kendricks, who will be replacing Leighton Vander Esch, who announced his retirement.
Alas, the team did suffer several losses during free agency. Their offensive line depth was hit hard with Tyron Smith leaving to sign a deal with the New York Jets and center Tyler Biadasz joining the Washington Commanders.
Following him to Washington is defensive end Dorance Armstrong, who will continue playing under head coach Dan Quinn, who was the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator the last three seasons. Running back Tony Pollard also departed, signing a deal with the Tennessee Titans.
With no cap space to spend, it wasn’t a surprise that the Dallas Cowboys were quiet in free agency. But, in the opinion of Trevor Sikkema over at PFF, this was an underwhelming offseason for Jerry Jones and company. Sikkema gave the Cowboys an offseason grade of C+, which is hard to argue against.
The depth that was lost in the trenches was replenished during the 2024 NFL Draft, which was a positive for the franchise. But, questions still loom long-term as they didn’t work out an extension with quarterback Dak Prescott or wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
That is something they could soon regret. Extensions for either player would improve their salary cap situation and put everyone at least for what is to come in the future. There is a chance major changes come in 2025, especially if the Dallas Cowboys fail to end their NFC Championship Game drought.
