The latest installment of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s popular podcast carried a heavy emotional weight this week. During the Tuesday broadcast of “The Dale Jr. Download,” the NASCAR Hall of Famer opened up about his personal connection to Kyle Busch, the two-time Cup Series champion who tragically died the previous week.

Earnhardt’s reflections painted a picture of recent camaraderie that had grown between the two former rivals, offering listeners a glimpse into private moments that came just before the sudden loss.

One particularly poignant segment focused on their final exchange, which took place only a day before Busch’s passing. The conversation centered on plans for an upcoming racing project involving a late model car and the CARS Tour.

Earnhardt described how the two had arranged to collaborate at his shop, highlighting a shared enthusiasm that underscored their reconciled friendship.

“I was texting with him the day before he passed away about getting together this Thursday to bring his seat for his late model over to my shop,” Dale Jr. said. “We had agreed that he was going to race our car in the CARS Tour.”As the messages continued, the pair moved from logistics to creative details about the car’s appearance. They discussed possible paint schemes and, importantly, the number Busch would run. Earnhardt gave his friend full freedom in the decisions, leading to a memorable choice that carried special significance.“

“He’s texting me, and he’s like, ‘What scheme we going to run?’ And I was like, ‘You can run any scheme you want.’ I was like, ‘What number do you want to run?’” Earnhardt Jr. continued.

“He goes … he said it, literally, ‘The Dale Jr. 8.’ I was like, ‘You got it.’”

Throughout the episode, Earnhardt visibly struggled to maintain his composure while recounting these stories. The grief was palpable as he discussed how the loss had affected him, revealing the depth of their renewed bond. He expressed regret over not having more time to deepen their personal connection beyond the racetrack.

The podcast also touched on the positive aspects that have emerged in the wake of the tragedy. Earnhardt spoke warmly about discovering new dimensions of Busch’s character through stories shared by others. He emphasized the value of understanding the man behind the intense competitor known to fans.

“What I’ve enjoyed, I guess, is learning more about Kyle the person,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “We know who he is on the race track, we know how he is on the race track and in the media, and so forth. What he was like at the track with the suit on and in that environment. I knew him on a personal level.”

“But hearing how he interacted and how he was to others, the joke they may have shared in a text… I’ve really enjoyed learning who he was away from the track and how he interacted and engaged, or treated, or talked to other people, and it’s been good.”

Their relationship had not always been smooth, a fact Earnhardt acknowledged openly. For years, the two drivers navigated a complicated dynamic marked by on-track battles and off-track tensions. However, both men took deliberate steps in recent times to bridge those gaps, leading to genuine respect and collaboration.

When Busch first passed away last week, Earnhardt said that he was at least happy to have worked out the differences that they had for many years well-before then.

“Kyle and I had a really challenging existence for many years. But we luckily took the time to figure out our differences and that was something he instigated with a conversation in his bus around how we each managed our racing team,” Earnhardt posted on X. “I was super eager for us to get on better terms. But it was he who made the effort for that to be possible.”

Busch’s death came unexpectedly at the age of 41. Medical reports indicated that sepsis, stemming from a severe case of pneumonia, was the cause. The racing community continues to mourn the loss of a driver known for his fierce competitiveness and multiple championships.

As tributes pour in from across the motorsports world, Earnhardt’s heartfelt recollections serve as a reminder of the personal connections that often exist beyond public rivalries.

The episode stands as both a celebration of Busch’s life and a sobering reflection on the fragility of time, encouraging fans to value relationships while they can.
