The Chicago Cubs have finally started making moves in MLB free agency after a period of deliberation. They’ve set their sights on Japanese ace Shota Imanaga and the experienced reliever Hector Neris, who could significantly bolster their pitching staff, which faced some challenges towards the end of the 2023 season.
However, the Cubs’ front office will eventually have to address their lineup concerns.
One possible solution to bolster the lineup is a reunion with a former player, but fans will need to exercise patience in this regard. They recently received a major prediction about Cody Bellinger.
“The Cubs are the most likely landing spot for Cody Bellinger, multiple people in the baseball industry told me this week, although there is no indication that Bellinger is close to choosing a team.”
Even before the official start of the offseason, it was evident that predicting Cody Bellinger’s future would be a tricky task. His history of highs and lows, coupled with his stellar performance in the 2023 All-Star campaign, created an atmosphere of uncertainty. Teams are understandably cautious about investing heavily in the outfielder/first baseman, fearing a potential regression that could prove costly.
Bellinger’s career took a nosedive after winning the National League MVP title in 2019, primarily due to injuries and prolonged batting slumps. It seemed as if his days as an All-Star player were over. However, the Cubs managed to acquire him on a cost-effective, low-risk deal last offseason.
After an impressive 2023 season, where he posted a .307 batting average with 26 home runs and 97 RBIs, the 28-year-old is now looking to secure a lucrative contract.
As a result, the waiting game continues for Chicago. The team is likely aiming to outlast the competition in the market and hope that Cody Bellinger chooses to remain in the place where he rejuvenated his career. With Spring Training just around the corner, the anticipation builds.
