In the early hours of Friday morning, a sudden landslide tore through a residential area along the Wujiang River in Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County, part of the southwestern Chinese municipality of Chongqing.
The event triggered the collapse of several buildings situated on lower ground, leaving an as-yet undetermined number of residents buried beneath tons of rock and debris. Thus far, eight have been declared dead and 34 are missing.
Local authorities had received an early alert when a community worker noticed loose rocks tumbling down the slope shortly after 8 a.m. local time.
In response, officials quickly moved to evacuate more than 60 people from the threatened zone. Tragically, the landslide struck while the evacuation was still underway, at approximately 9:08 a.m., catching some residents before they could reach safety.
Rescue teams acted swiftly despite the challenges. By midday, emergency workers had successfully extracted nine individuals from the rubble.
According to state media reports, none of those rescued were in critical condition, offering a measure of relief amid the unfolding crisis. However, search operations continued as officials worked to determine the full extent of those still missing.
Dramatic footage captured the chaos. Aerial views broadcast by state television showed massive sections of the hillside giving way, sending cascades of rock and earth crashing onto riverside homes and businesses. Thick clouds of dust enveloped the area as panicked residents fled for their lives.
A separate dashcam recording, independently verified, depicted the moment a portion of the slope collapsed onto the road below, scattering debris and halting passing vehicles in their tracks.
China’s national emergency authorities responded with significant resources. The Ministry of Emergency Management activated a level-two response protocol and deployed a specialized team of around 100 rescuers to the site.
In total, more than 200 personnel and dozens of vehicles from fire and rescue units were mobilized to support ongoing recovery efforts.
The precise trigger for the landslide remains under investigation, with no immediate indications of human activity or weather anomalies cited in initial reports.
The incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by communities in China’s geologically active mountainous regions, where heavy rains, seismic activity, and steep terrain can combine to create sudden hazards.
As rescue operations press forward, local and national officials continue to monitor the situation closely, prioritizing the safety of remaining residents and the thorough search for anyone still trapped. The community of Pengshui now faces the difficult task of recovery in the wake of this sudden natural disaster.
