The Dallas Cowboys absorbed another setback beyond their 33-30 overtime defeat to the Arizona Cardinals when the NFL issued fines to three defensive players for hits involving helmet contact during the Week 8 game at AT&T Stadium.

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was fined $9,528 for unnecessary roughness related to use of the helmet on a second-quarter play against Cardinals running back Bam Knight. The contact forced a fumble that Dallas recovered, but it also left Knight with a concussion that sidelined him for Arizona’s subsequent contest.

Edge rusher Rashan Gary drew a $17,911 fine for a blow to the head or neck area of quarterback Gardner Minshew on a fourth-quarter play. Officials flagged the hit on the field, erasing an incomplete pass and awarding the Cardinals a first down that led to a touchdown on the next snap, helping fuel Arizona’s late rally.

Safety P.J. Locke received the largest penalty of the three, a $19,444 fine for unnecessary roughness involving use of the helmet on a hit to running back Tyler Allgeier during overtime. Officials did not throw a flag on the play, but Locke left the field afterward and spent time in the concussion protocol before being cleared to face the Indianapolis Colts.

The three fines total $46,883. League funds from such penalties typically support player assistance and related foundation efforts.

Through eight games, the Cowboys have been assessed 60 penalties for 514 yards, ranking them among the more frequently flagged teams in the NFL at roughly 7.5 infractions per contest. In the Cardinals matchup itself, Dallas was called for seven penalties totaling 45 yards while Arizona was flagged nine times for 77 yards.

The Cowboys entered the game at 3-4 and fell to 3-5 with the loss, remaining in the NFC East mix but needing cleaner play as they travel to face the Colts. Gary’s penalty proved particularly costly in the moment, converting what appeared to be a manageable situation for Dallas into a scoring chance for the visitors.

Overshown’s fine marks his second of the season after an earlier assessment for a hit in the season-opening loss to the New York Giants. Locke, in his first year with Dallas, has contributed on the back end amid injuries at the safety position.

Knight’s absence for the Cardinals’ next outing underscored the league’s emphasis on reducing head contact even when plays go unflagged in real time. The accountability report covering Week 8 actions highlighted these three Cowboys incidents as part of broader enforcement of player-safety rules.

Dallas limited Arizona’s offense for stretches of the contest before the late breakdowns, holding the Cardinals to season-low output in some categories at points while still allowing the comeback. The overtime result extended a stretch of close losses and raised questions about discipline in critical situations.

Team officials addressed the Gary hit in the days following the game, noting internal discussions about the play’s impact. The fines arrive as the Cowboys prepare for a road matchup that offers a chance to reverse the recent trend.

Across the league, such postgame reviews continue to shape how teams approach tackling technique, with financial penalties serving as an additional deterrent beyond on-field flags. For Dallas, the combined cost adds to a season in which defensive mistakes have factored into several outcomes.

The Colts present a different challenge after their own uneven start, but the Cowboys will need to limit both penalties and big plays allowed to improve their record. Statistics from tracking services confirm the penalty volume and fine amounts cited in the league’s updated accountability materials.
