No. 1 Miami faces uncertainty at receiver as Malachi Toney deals with an ankle injury ahead of the Hurricanes’ road matchup against Notre Dame on Saturday.

Sources told ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Max Olson that the sophomore wideout’s status is uncertain for the 7:30 p.m. ET game at Notre Dame Stadium.

“Toney is expected to press and attempt to play, given the magnitude of the game,” Thamel reported.

The injury is not viewed as a long-term issue, according to those sources. Miami confirmed that Toney was hurt during Wednesday’s practice and is undergoing further evaluation by the team’s medical staff, with updates to follow as appropriate.

Toney has been central to Miami’s undefeated 8-0 start. The 5-foot-11 receiver ranks second nationally with 73 catches, third with 1,027 receiving yards and third with 13 touchdown receptions through eight games.

Those numbers include standout efforts such as 154 yards and two scores in Miami’s double-overtime win over Florida State, plus 194 yards and three touchdowns against Pittsburgh. He has topped 100 receiving yards in five of eight contests.

Miami’s offense, which leads the nation at 47.6 points per game and ranks second at 534.9 yards per game, has leaned heavily on the connection between Toney and quarterback Darian Mensah. Mensah enters as the favorite for the Heisman Trophy, with Toney among the leading contenders.

The Hurricanes debuted at No. 1 in both the AP Top 25 and the first College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday. Notre Dame sits at No. 11 in the CFP rankings and is 7-1.

Saturday’s result carries clear postseason stakes. A Miami win would help protect its top seeding and improve its path toward a first-round bye, while a loss could alter the Hurricanes’ standing. For Notre Dame, a defeat would further complicate its playoff hopes given the remaining schedule.

Toney has not missed a game in his college career, though he has left contests briefly with apparent injuries before returning. If he is limited or unavailable, Miami would likely turn to options such as Daylyn Upshaw or Vance Spafford in the slot.

The Hurricanes will also face a Notre Dame secondary that includes cornerback Leonard Moore, a top prospect on Mel Kiper’s Big Board who is expected to play after missing the Irish’s prior game.

Miami coach Mario Cristobal has typically been reserved with injury details, and the nonconference matchup does not require a public injury report. Officials and sources indicate Toney is pushing to suit up despite the ankle issue.

The game is set for Saturday night on NBC. Any final decision on Toney’s availability is expected closer to kickoff after continued evaluation.
