The Kansas City Royals have released catcher Jorge Alfaro, according to the official MiLB transaction log.

Late last week, the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers listed the 33-year-old as released by the organization, ending a one-year minor-league stint that began with a free-agent signing in late December 2025.

Alfaro, a right-handed-hitting Colombian native, spent most of the 2026 campaign with the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals before a late-season call-up to Omaha.

Across 233 at-bats in the minors, he hit .223 with 15 home runs, 51 RBIs, and a .755 OPS.

The bulk of his production came at AA, where he launched 14 home runs in roughly 56 games while posting solid power numbers despite a high strikeout rate that has defined much of his professional career.

The release is the latest chapter in a winding journeyman path for the former top prospect.

Originally signed by the Texas Rangers, Alfaro was part of the package sent to the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2015 Cole Hamels trade.

He debuted in the majors in 2016 and later moved to the Miami Marlins in the J.T. Realmuto deal.

His best seasons came early: a solid 2018 with the Phillies and a career-high 18 home runs with the Marlins in 2019.

Over nine MLB seasons with the Phillies, Marlins, Padres, Rockies, Red Sox, and Nationals, Alfaro owns a .253/.301/.391 slash line with 48 home runs and 201 RBIs in 510 games.

After limited major-league action in recent years—including 14 games with the Nationals in 2025—Alfaro signed with Kansas City as organizational depth behind Salvador Perez and rising prospect Carter Jensen.

He never forced his way onto the big-league roster in 2026.

Following the release, he quickly signed on with the Yaquis de Obregón of the Mexican Pacific League, where he is expected to bring major-league experience and power to the winter circuit.

At 33, Alfaro remains a known quantity as a strong-armed catcher with raw power, though contact and plate-discipline issues have limited his staying power at the highest level.

The Royals’ move clears a roster spot as the organization continues postseason roster churn, while Alfaro seeks another opportunity to extend his professional career.
