The Houston Astros enter another offseason still positioned to contend in a wide-open American League West, even after an early playoff exit.

Core pieces such as Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez remain under team control, giving the club a foundation that can support another push for a division title and deeper postseason run.

Starting pitching depth, however, stands out as one of the clearer areas where Houston can strengthen its roster and keep its championship window open.

In a recent FanSided analysis, Jake Elman highlighted the possibility of the Astros acquiring former National League Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara from the Miami Marlins.

Elman noted that Alcantara carries a $21 million club option for 2027 along with a $1 million trade assignment bonus, and that the right-hander does not hold a no-trade clause.

That combination leaves the door open for a deal if the cost-conscious Marlins decide the return justifies moving him.

Alcantara, who just turned 31, posted a 3.87 ERA in 2026. That mark represented his lowest since the 2022 season in which he captured the Cy Young Award, and he appeared to gain confidence as the year progressed.

For Houston, he would project as a natural complement behind Hunter Brown at the top of the rotation, providing a durable veteran arm capable of handling a heavy workload.

The Astros have shown a willingness in recent years to add proven starters through trade or free agency when the opportunity aligns with their payroll flexibility, and Alcantara’s remaining control fits the profile of a move that could stabilize the staff without requiring a long-term free-agent commitment.

Whether Miami ultimately parts with him remains uncertain.

The Marlins have held onto Alcantara through previous trade deadlines and offseasons while dealing other pitchers, and ownership has previously described him as a franchise cornerstone.

Still, the absence of a no-trade clause and the presence of a sizable club option give Houston a legitimate opening to inquire.

A package centered on controllable young talent or a mix of prospects and salary relief could test Miami’s resolve, particularly if the Marlins view the option year as an opportunity to maximize value before Alcantara reaches free agency.

Adding a pitcher of Alcantara’s caliber would not solve every roster question facing the Astros, but it would address one of the most direct paths to remaining competitive.

A reliable No. 2 starter behind Brown would ease pressure on the rest of the rotation and bullpen, allowing the lineup’s remaining stars to drive the club deeper into October.

As the offseason unfolds, the feasibility of a deal will hinge on Miami’s asking price and Houston’s willingness to meet it, yet the fit itself is clear enough that the Astros should explore it seriously.
