The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the final stretch before the NFL trade deadline with a defense that has ranked among the league’s better units through the early weeks, yet secondary depth remains a clear area where an upgrade could strengthen the group for a postseason push.

Pittsburgh has already shown a willingness to address the back end through free agency and the draft in recent cycles, but the current mix has left room for a proven, versatile veteran who can contribute immediately in multiple alignments without requiring a long developmental runway.

In his 2026 Trade Deadline Big Board for The Athletic, Daniel Popper listed Chargers safety Derwin James among the 50 players who could potentially move before November 10 and specifically named the Steelers as one of the best fits alongside the Lions and Bears.

James signed a three-year, $75.6 million extension back in May that runs through 2029, yet Popper noted that the Chargers would absorb only about $9 million in dead money in 2027 if they dealt him, while an acquiring team would inherit a projected 2026 cap hit near $5.75 million and a $17.5 million fully guaranteed base salary the following year.

That structure makes the financial side more manageable than many high-profile midseason targets, particularly for a team like Pittsburgh that has managed its cap with an eye toward selective additions.

From the Steelers’ perspective, James offers the kind of near-line-of-scrimmage impact that fits the physical, versatile style the defense has long preferred.

At 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, he has thrived when deployed as a nickel defender rather than a pure deep safety, where his tackling, blitzing, and ability to match up on tight ends or slot receivers can disrupt both the run and short passing game.

Those traits would complement Pittsburgh’s existing front seven and allow coordinator Patrick Graham greater flexibility in coverage packages without forcing a complete schematic overhaul.

The fact that James has spent his entire career with the Chargers also means any trade would bring a player still in his prime window, even as he approaches his 31st birthday next August.

Any pursuit would still require careful evaluation of recent availability and the long-term guarantees.

James has already missed multiple games this season with a hamstring injury, a reminder that durability must factor into the cost calculation alongside draft capital.

For a Steelers team sitting at 4-2 and looking to solidify its secondary while remaining competitive, however, the combination of proven production, scheme fit, and a contract that does not impose an overwhelming immediate burden makes him a logical name to explore as the deadline approaches.

Whether Los Angeles ultimately decides to move a player it just extended will depend on how the Chargers’ 0-6 start evolves, but from Pittsburgh’s vantage point the opportunity aligns with a clear roster need.

We’ll see if the Steelers make a push for James in the coming weeks.
