Mark Davis has decided his days of personally steering the Las Vegas Raiders’ search for head coaches and general managers are finished.

After years of cycling through both positions with limited success, the owner told The New York Post that he intends to stay out of future hiring processes.

“My role is pretty much over in that regard,” Davis said. “We got who we all believe are the right choices.”

The shift comes after a long stretch in which Davis, who assumed control following his father Al’s death in 2011, repeatedly tried to install the right football leadership himself.

Multiple head coaches and general managers came and went. Last year he began relying more heavily on minority owner Tom Brady, a move that helped produce the hiring of general manager John Spytek.

This offseason the organization landed Klint Kubiak as head coach after identifying him as one of the stronger available candidates.

So far the early returns have been encouraging. The Raiders sit at 3-3, a mark that has exceeded many preseason expectations, and Kubiak is calling plays for an offense that ranks among the league’s higher-scoring units.

Spytek, though not without misses, carries a reputation as a respected talent evaluator.

The combination has created a sense, unusual in recent Raiders history, that the franchise may finally be assembling a stable core rather than searching again within a season or two.

That stability remains unproven. Previous tenures under Jon Gruden, Josh McDaniels, Antonio Pierce, and Pete Carroll each ended without the sustained progress the organization sought.

Davis has long expressed frustration at the difficulty of finding people who can run the football operation effectively. While he now expresses confidence in the current pair, the Raiders remain his team.

Should results sour or faith in Brady’s judgment on personnel diminish, the owner retains the authority to re-engage in decisions he currently describes as settled.

For the moment, the stated plan is patience. Spytek is viewed as needing at least a few full seasons to shape the roster, while Kubiak is still relatively young and working through the adjustments that come with a first head-coaching job.

If that pairing holds, the Raiders could avoid the pattern of near-annual turnover that has defined much of the post-Al Davis era.

Whether Davis truly remains on the sideline will depend on how the on-field results develop over the coming years.
