The Philadelphia Eagles entered the 2026 season with Super Bowl aspirations, yet the franchise now faces a sudden and severe crisis at quarterback.

Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for the remainder of the year after doctors identified deep vein thrombosis and multiple blood clots in his lungs.

The 28-year-old remains clinically stable and is expected to make a full recovery once he finishes treatment with blood thinners, but he cannot participate in contact activities in the meantime.

With the Eagles sitting at 2-4 after a 25-14 home loss to the Carolina Panthers in which Tanner McKee started, the team must stabilize its offense while Howie Roseman evaluates options both inside and outside the building.

One name that surfaces in any discussion of ambitious external moves is Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers, with Matt Reed of the Big Lead naming Herbert as a potential trad target for Philadelphia.

The former Oregon star is only 28 and still widely regarded as one of the more talented pure passers in the league, possessing the arm strength, accuracy, and mobility that once made him a perennial Pro Bowl candidate.

For an Eagles organization that has built its recent success around a dual-threat quarterback and a physical style of play, Herbert’s skill set would represent a significant stylistic shift, yet it could also inject elite downfield throwing into an offense that has struggled to generate explosive plays without Hurts.

The practical barriers remain enormous. Herbert is under contract through the 2029 season after signing a massive extension, and any trade would require the Chargers to absorb a substantial cap hit while demanding a haul of premium draft capital.

Los Angeles is already 0-6 and mired near the bottom of the league in most offensive categories, with Herbert completing just 59.4 percent of his passes for 1,141 yards, five touchdowns, and eight interceptions through six games.

Those numbers, combined with a porous supporting cast, have fueled trade speculation around the deadline.

Still, reports indicate the Chargers have shown no interest in dealing their franchise quarterback, even as a high-level executive floated the theoretical possibility of three first-round picks in return.

From Philadelphia’s perspective, pursuing Herbert would amount to a high-risk, high-reward gamble that only makes sense in the absolute worst-case scenario for Hurts’s recovery timeline.

Blood clots are unpredictable, and while the current prognosis is positive, any further complications could force the Eagles to think longer-term than the remainder of 2026.

Even then, matching Herbert’s salary, surrendering the picks needed to land him, and integrating a new signal-caller midseason into Nick Sirianni’s system would stretch the roster and front office. More realistic paths remain closer to home with McKee, the recent addition of Joe Milton, and potential lower-cost veterans.

Herbert’s name is the ultimate long shot, a reminder of how quickly an elite young passer can become a subject of league-wide trade chatter when a contending team suddenly loses its starting quarterback.

For now, the Eagles will focus on keeping their playoff hopes alive with the pieces already in place while monitoring a Chargers situation that grows more uncertain by the week.
