The sudden news out of Philadelphia has created an unexpected opening for the Pittsburgh Steelers to address a lingering roster question.

With Jalen Hurts expected to miss the rest of the 2026 season after blood clots were found in his lungs, the Eagles face an immediate shortage at quarterback.

For Pittsburgh, that development turns veteran backup Mason Rudolph into a logical trade candidate at a moment when the Steelers already have more signal-callers than they can meaningfully use, and Matt Reed of The Big Lead feels he could represent a viable trade target for the Eagles.

Rudolph has spent most of this season in a familiar but limited role behind Aaron Rodgers.

The Steelers carried four quarterbacks into the regular season, pairing the veteran starter with Rudolph, second-year player Will Howard, and rookie Drew Allar.

That depth has left Rudolph with almost no game snaps while the organization continues to evaluate its younger options. Rodgers has shown enough to keep the offense moving, and the coaching staff has made clear that Howard and Allar represent the longer-term plan.

In that environment, Rudolph’s value sits more in what he can bring another team than in what he can add to Pittsburgh’s own weekly preparation.

The Eagles’ situation is different. After Tanner McKee struggled in a loss to the Panthers, Philadelphia needs an experienced option who can keep the offense functional while Hurts undergoes treatment. Rudolph fits that profile.

He has made 19 career starts, thrown for nearly 5,000 yards and 30 touchdowns, and owns a roughly even record as a starter. He is not a long-term answer for most teams, but he is a known quantity who has operated in multiple systems and does not require a large financial commitment.

For a club that began the year 2-0 and has since lost four straight, that kind of steady, low-cost reinforcement has clear appeal.

From Pittsburgh’s side, the timing is convenient. The trade deadline is approaching, and several teams around the league are dealing with quarterback injuries or thin depth charts.

Earlier in the offseason the Steelers reportedly received little meaningful interest in Rudolph. The Hurts diagnosis changes the calculation. Moving him would free a roster spot, allow the organization to focus practice and meeting time on Howard and Allar, and potentially return a late-round pick or other asset while Rodgers remains healthy.

The Steelers are not obligated to deal him; they still value his reliability as insurance. But they also do not need to carry four quarterbacks indefinitely when two of them are developmental pieces the team wants to keep.

Whether Philadelphia or another club ultimately makes an offer remains to be seen.

What is clear is that Rudolph’s situation in Pittsburgh has grown more complicated than it was a week ago, and the Eagles’ sudden need has given the Steelers a practical reason to listen.

For a franchise still sorting out its quarterback future behind Rodgers, that is the kind of opportunity worth weighing before the deadline arrives.
