Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Andy Dalton has signed with the Atlanta Falcons, ending a short and uneven stint with the Philadelphia Eagles while adding another chapter to a lengthy NFL career that briefly intersected with America’s Team.

The move, reported Monday, came after the Eagles released him on October 9 following a single-pass appearance that produced an interception against the Chicago Bears.

Atlanta cleared a roster spot by releasing Cooper Rush, another quarterback with prior Cowboys ties, in a corresponding transaction.

Dalton’s time in Dallas remains the most prominent stop of his post-Bengals career for many observers.

Signed in 2020 as insurance behind Dak Prescott, the Katy, Texas, native stepped into the starting role after Prescott suffered a season-ending ankle injury early in the year.

He appeared in roughly a dozen games and made nine starts, delivering 2,169 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and eight interceptions as the Cowboys finished 6-10.

Those numbers reflected the familiar Dalton profile: competent enough to keep a team competitive in stretches, yet rarely transformative when the supporting cast struggled.

For a franchise that values stability at the position and has long grappled with finding reliable depth behind its starter, the brief experiment illustrated both the value and the limitations of a veteran stopgap.

That same profile now lands him in Atlanta. Entering his 16th NFL season with roughly $118 million in career earnings, most of it earned during nine seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals’ primary starter, Dalton brings extensive experience as a bridge or emergency option.

He began the current year in Philadelphia after beating out Tanner McKee for the backup role behind Jalen Hurts. When Hurts later dealt with a blood-clot issue that required extended recovery, the Eagles expressed interest in bringing Dalton back.

He declined, opting instead for the Falcons, who have already cycled through multiple quarterbacks including Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa.

The decision underscores the practical realities of a late-career journeyman: available opportunities are weighed against playing time, scheme fit, and organizational stability rather than nostalgia for past stops.

From a Cowboys perspective, Dalton’s latest destination is noteworthy mainly for what it represents about roster depth and veteran movement around the league. Dallas fans remember him as the Texas product who filled in during an injury crisis and produced serviceable, if unspectacular, results.

His departure from Philadelphia and arrival in Atlanta, paired with the simultaneous release of Rush, highlights how former Cowboys quarterbacks continue to circulate as experienced insurance policies.

Neither player’s current situation suggests an imminent return to Dallas, yet their parallel paths serve as a reminder of the organization’s occasional reliance on known quantities when injuries strike.

At 38, Dalton is unlikely to reclaim a starting job for any extended period. His value remains in familiarity and preparedness should Penix or Tagovailoa miss time.

For those who followed his 2020 tenure in Arlington, the signing simply continues a career defined by adaptability rather than prolonged glory. The Red Rifle keeps finding work, even if the destinations keep changing.
