Atlanta Braves fans held their breath Tuesday night when Ronald Acuña Jr. crumpled after fouling a pitch off his left shin.
The star outfielder was facing Cincinnati’s Brandon Williamson in the third inning at Truist Park, sitting on a 3-1 count, when an inside cutter caromed off the bone just above his protective guard.
He dropped to the dirt, rose, then went down again before walking off the field under his own power. X-rays and a CT scan later confirmed a contusion and nothing more serious. The club listed him as day-to-day.
The timing could hardly have been worse. Atlanta had already wrapped up the National League East for the seventh time in nine seasons and sat as the likely third seed heading into October.
Acuña, the 2023 MVP who has battled hamstring issues earlier this year, had finally found his rhythm. Since late August he had been one of the hottest hitters in baseball, posting a .368 average with seven home runs and 20 RBIs over a 23-game stretch.
For the season he sat at .259 with 20 homers and 20 stolen bases in 104 games, a 20-20 campaign that still carried the threat of another postseason surge.
Wednesday’s lineup offered the first official update.
Acuña was held out of the series finale against the Reds. Beat writer Mark Bowman reported the encouraging details: the outfielder was walking without a limp and had told the team he was ready to play right field. Manager Walt Weiss and the training staff chose caution instead.
With the division already secured and the regular season winding down, they opted to give him a full rest day and expect him back Thursday. Weiss had already called the news “good” after Tuesday’s tests, noting the club would err on the side of caution at this point in the year.
That measured approach makes sense. Acuña has missed significant time with leg injuries in 2026, and a bruised shin can linger if rushed.
Yet the early signs point toward a short absence rather than another lengthy stay on the sidelines. He wanted to play immediately, the limp is gone, and the imaging is clean. For a Braves team that has already punched its ticket to October, the priority is having its most dynamic player healthy when the games start to matter most.
The rest of the roster will try to keep the momentum going in the final week. Atlanta still has a few games left to lock in seeding, but the bigger picture is October readiness.
If Acuña is back in the lineup as expected, the scare will become little more than a footnote in a season that has already featured both frustration and a late surge.
Braves supporters can breathe easier for now, knowing their franchise cornerstone appears to have dodged a far more serious outcome.
