The San Francisco Giants have spent more than a year trying to make Rafael Devers feel at home after the stunning 2025 trade that brought him west from Boston.

That experiment now sits at another crossroads.

ESPN’s Buster Olney recently named the New York Yankees as a potential landing spot for the slugger, framing the idea as a cultural and lineup fit that could tempt both sides this winter.

“He would be perfect with the Yankees. All he would have to do is hit,” Olney said.

Devers arrived in San Francisco carrying the remainder of a 10-year, $313.5 million contract and the expectation that his bat would immediately change the middle of the Giants order.

The first months were uneven. A slow start and the usual growing pains of a new park and new teammates left some wondering whether the deal would ever look like a win. Then, Devers heated up.

He finished the 2026 regular season hitting .258 with 37 home runs and 98 RBIs before a core-muscle injury shut him down in mid-September.

Those late numbers were a reminder of the player the Giants thought they were getting.

From the Giants’ side, any conversation about moving Devers would be complicated by the money still owed and by the fact that he just produced a 37-homer season.

Front-office leaders would have to decide whether the remaining years and dollars still match their longer-term plan, especially if they intend to stay competitive rather than tear everything down.

A Yankees deal would almost certainly require San Francisco to eat a significant portion of the contract or receive a package of prospects and roster pieces that helps restock the farm.

For Giants fans the rumor lands with mixed feelings. Devers showed he can still mash, even in a pitcher-friendly park, and his presence gave the lineup a middle-of-the-order threat it had lacked.

Yet the clubhouse and media demands in San Francisco are different from those in the Bronx. If Olney is right that Devers simply wants to hit and be left alone, a change of scenery might actually serve both player and team.

Whether the Giants are willing to reopen a chapter they hoped was closed will be one of the more interesting questions of the coming offseason.
