Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence walked off EverBank Stadium on Sunday looking like a quarterback who had already put a successful afternoon behind him.
Jacksonville’s 34-10 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 was never really in doubt after the first quarter, and Lawrence’s efficient day was the clearest reason why.
After the game Lawrence posted a short message on the NFL’s official social channels.
“Sup Jags fans. Appreciate y’all showing up and being loud. Great win in Week 1. Gotta keep it rolling. Go Jags!” Lawrence said.
The clip showed a relaxed quarterback who had little reason to sound otherwise.
Jacksonville is 1-0, Lawrence is healthy, and the Jaguars have already shown they can pile on points and get their starter off the field early.
The rest of the season will test whether that first-week ease can last. For one Sunday in September, it was more than enough.
He completed 18 of 23 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He was sacked only once and added a pair of modest runs. The scoring throws went to four different teammates, a spread that made the Jaguars’ passing game look deeper than it had in stretches last season.
After winning the AFC South a year ago, the opening statement was loud enough that Jacksonville could take Lawrence out with the score 34-3 and let Nick Mullens finish the game.
The tone of the day was set early. Foyesade Oluokun intercepted Deshaun Watson on Cleveland’s third pass attempt. Josh Hines-Allen followed with a strip sack, and the Browns never recovered.
Lawrence found Parker Washington for a 30-yard touchdown on a leaping catch, then hit sixth-round rookie Josh Cameron from four yards out. Brenton Strange added a 14-yard score, and Jakobi Meyers finished the barrage with a 32-yard touchdown.
Washington led the receivers with five catches for 83 yards. Brian Thomas Jr. left with a shoulder injury after three receptions for 40 yards, the only notable offensive concern on an otherwise clean day.
The defense was equally dominant until the backups allowed a late score to rookie Denzel Boston. Ventrell Miller piled up 10 tackles, two for loss including a sack.
Hines-Allen and Travon Walker each finished with 1.5 sacks. Cam Little was perfect on kicks, and Logan Cooke averaged 54 yards on two punts.
The Jaguars will face the Denver Broncos next Sunday.
