The Detroit Lions officially placed rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder on injured reserve, ending his 2026 season after a significant hamstring injury suffered in their recent victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

The move, announced Tuesday, also saw the team waive defensive back Bishop Fitzgerald to create the necessary roster opening.

Rolder, a 22-year-old product of the University of Michigan, entered the league as the 118th overall selection in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

He signed a standard four-year rookie contract worth just over $5.5 million that includes a signing bonus of roughly $1.15 million and a 2026 base salary of $885,000.

At Michigan, he started 11 games as a senior and finished that year with 73 total tackles, establishing himself as a physical, downhill player in the Wolverines’ scheme.

His professional debut was delayed almost immediately. A hamstring issue early in training camp kept him off the field for most of the preseason and limited him early in the regular season.

He eventually appeared in five games, recording 11 total tackles, three tackles for loss, and his first career sack.

Against the Vikings he finally saw his heaviest workload—about 17 defensive snaps—and responded with five tackles, a sack, and another tackle for loss before leaving the game.

Coach Dan Campbell later described the injury as significant and one that could require surgery, confirming Rolder would miss the remainder of the year.

The timing is especially frustrating for both player and team.

Rolder had spent months working his way back from the earlier soft-tissue problem only to sustain a more serious version of the same injury just as he began to carve out a meaningful role.

Detroit’s linebacker group was already thin after Jack Campbell also went down in the same contest; the organization now faces further questions about depth at the position while Rolder shifts his focus entirely to rehabilitation and a return in 2027.

For a Day 3 pick who showed flashes of the physical brand of football the Lions value, the lost season represents a clear setback.

Yet the contract and draft capital invested in him suggest the front office still views him as part of the long-term plan once he is fully healthy.

In the short term, the roster will move forward without him, relying on the remaining linebackers and any outside additions general manager Brad Holmes and the coaching staff elect to pursue.
