Fantasy managers who rostered Alvin Kamara entered Sunday morning hoping the veteran running back would suit up for the New Orleans Saints’ season opener in Detroit. Those hopes faded quickly.
Multiple reports indicated Kamara would sit against the Lions despite practicing fully on Friday and earning a questionable tag on the final injury report.
Kamara has been working his way back from an MCL sprain suffered during training camp in August. The initial timeline suggested he could miss at least a month. He progressed faster than expected, participating in limited fashion Wednesday and Thursday before taking every snap in Friday’s practice.
That late-week jump fueled optimism that he might debut in Week 1. The Saints, however, chose caution. With the game plan already in place and another week of recovery available, they decided against rushing him onto the field at Ford Field.
The decision is straightforward for fantasy purposes. Kamara belongs on the bench in standard formats this week. Even if New Orleans had activated him at the last minute, his role was expected to be limited.
Saints reporter Nick Underhill noted before kickoff that the coaching staff was unlikely to give the 30-year-old a heavy workload in his first game back. That caution makes sense.
Kamara is no longer the undisputed lead back in New Orleans. The Saints signed Travis Etienne Jr. in the offseason, and both veterans were listed as options at the top of the unofficial depth chart heading into the opener.
With Kamara out, Etienne becomes the clearest fantasy option in the Saints backfield against Detroit.
Additional depth exists in Kendre Miller and rookie CJ Donaldson, who was elevated from the practice squad after Audric Estimé was placed on injured reserve Saturday. Those players figure to see work, but Etienne should handle the largest share of meaningful touches.
The encouraging development for New Orleans is that Kamara reached a full practice by week’s end. That suggests the absence is more about ensuring the knee is fully ready than a significant setback.
The Saints play the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2, giving Kamara another seven days to continue building toward his 2026 debut. For Sunday, though, managers should not wait for a surprise activation.
The latest reporting points to Kamara remaining inactive, leaving Etienne at the center of the New Orleans rushing attack for the season’s first game.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Ford Field.
Kamara will watch from the sideline and target next week for his return.
