The Milwaukee Brewers did not need a statement lineup after Friday night. They already made one.
A night after pounding the Cincinnati Reds 20-0 and clinching a playoff berth, Milwaukee posted a Saturday batting order that quietly moved William Contreras out of the heart of the lineup and into the 5-hole, via Underdog MLB.
Jackson Chourio leads off, Brice Turang hits second, Jake Bauers is third, Christian Yelich is the designated hitter in the cleanup spot, and Contreras — the club’s everyday catcher and one of its most productive bats — is fifth.
That is a real shift.
Contreras has spent much of the season in the three-spot, and he just delivered one of his loudest games of the year: 2-for-5 with a three-run homer, six RBI and a run scored in the blowout. The homer was his 16th.
He entered Saturday hitting .272 with 83 RBI. Moving a catcher who just drove in six runs is not a demotion so much as a manager using a deep roster after the standings have already been settled.
The rest of the card fits the same late-season logic. Garrett Mitchell is in center, Sal Frelick in right, Cooper Pratt at shortstop and David Hamilton at third. Left-hander Shane Drohan gets the ball against Brady Singer and a Reds club sitting 69-78. First pitch at American Family Field is 7:10 p.m. ET.
There is a baseball reason to try this. Chourio and Turang give Milwaukee two dynamic table-setters. Bauers has shown power when he gets pitches to drive.
Yelich in the 4-hole, even as a DH, still forces a right-handed starter to pick his poison before Contreras comes up with runners on. If the first four get on, Contreras is still in position to do damage. If they do not, the five-hole is a less punishing place for a catcher who has already logged a heavy September.
The timing is the story more than the slot. Milwaukee is 92-56, the best record in the majors, 10 games up in the National League Central, with a magic number of four to wrap up the division.
Friday’s shutout clinched at least a Wild Card berth. Lineup experiments that would have looked frantic in July now look like October dress rehearsals: rest patterns, left-right mixes, and who hits where when the games start to count differently.
Contreras remains the most important bat in the middle of this order even if the number next to his name is a 5 instead of a 3. The Brewers are not hiding him. They are spreading the load after a 20-run night and asking a deep group to keep rolling while the Reds try to salvage a series.
Saturday’s card is a reminder that Milwaukee can win in more than one shape — and that Contreras is still the player opposing pitchers have to plan around, wherever he is written.
