The St. Louis Cardinals moved left-hander Brandon Clarke up to Double-A Springfield on Wednesday, one day after the big-league club was swept by the San Francisco Giants.
Clarke, 23, was promoted from High-A Peoria, according to Minor League Baseball’s transactions list. Peoria’s regular season is finished, so the move gives the prospect extra innings with Springfield before the minor-league schedule wraps up.
The Cardinals lost all three games in San Francisco. The Giants completed the sweep with a 7-6 win Wednesday after scoring six runs with two outs in the eighth inning.
St. Louis dropped to 72-75 and sits in fourth place in the National League Central, 19 games behind Milwaukee. The club returns home Friday to open a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox at Busch Stadium.
Clarke joined the organization in November 2025 when the Cardinals traded veteran starter Sonny Gray to the Boston Red Sox. St. Louis also received right-hander Richard Fitts in the deal.
The left-hander missed the first part of this season after January surgery to correct an aneurysm in his throwing arm. He did not pitch in a game until July.
Clarke began a rehab assignment with the Florida Complex League Cardinals and later appeared at Single-A Palm Beach. In one outing he was clocked at 103.1 mph.
This year he has made nine minor-league appearances and is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA. He has struck out 37 batters in 25 2/3 innings with a 1.13 WHIP.
In five starts at Peoria he posted a 3.44 ERA over 18 1/3 innings, with 27 strikeouts and nine walks. In 2025, his first full professional season with Boston’s affiliates, Clarke went 0-3 with a 4.03 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 38 innings across 14 starts.
President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom has been high on the pitcher’s raw stuff since the trade.
“Clarke’s pure arm talent is right up there with just about anybody who is pitching in the Minor Leagues right now,” Bloom said last winter. “Obviously, he’s a long way from establishing himself in the big leagues, but the upside is incredible there, and we want to help him reach it.”
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound native of Ashburn, Virginia, was Boston’s fifth-round pick in the 2024 draft out of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota. He signed for $400,000.
Bloom said the Cardinals’ pitching staff studied Clarke closely before the deal.
“We’re going to be there to support him, whether it’s what he does between the lines or what he does off the field, to make sure he has every chance to reach his potential,” Bloom said.
Evaluators still want to see better command and a more reliable changeup or curve. His fastball-slider mix already turns heads, and the late-season promotion is another step in a shortened year that began with surgery.
Clarke could keep building innings in the Arizona Fall League after Springfield’s season ends. The Cardinals have made young, high-upside arms a priority under Bloom as they try to restock the farm system.
The promotion does not change the immediate picture for a Cardinals team that has struggled to stay consistent. It does, however, give one of their more electric left-handed prospects a look at a higher level before the calendar turns.
