As the NFL trade deadline draws closer, the Minnesota Vikings find themselves in an unusual position.

Sitting at 6-1 after a loss to the Detroit Lions, the team has the record of a contender, yet questions about the quarterback position have grown loud enough to draw serious speculation.

Mike Silver of The Athletic has fueled that talk by pointing to two veteran names as potential targets if Minnesota decides a midseason change is necessary: Kirk Cousins and Daniel Jones.

Silver’s comments leave little ambiguity about the possibilities under discussion.

He asked whether the Vikings might explore a trade to reacquire Cousins from the Las Vegas Raiders or pursue Jones from the Indianapolis Colts.

He also noted that Kyler Murray dealt with hamstring tightness late in the Lions game and that a pivot to backup Carson Wentz remains on the table. The larger takeaway was that nothing appears ruled out as the deadline approaches.

Murray was signed as a free-agent stabilizer, but his performance has been uneven. Against Detroit he completed 17 of 29 passes for 210 yards with two touchdowns and an interception while absorbing three sacks.

Through six games, he has thrown for 1,022 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions, taken 15 sacks, and posted an 86.6 passer rating. Those numbers have not silenced concerns about pocket comfort or missed opportunities downfield.

Side-by-side production offers a clearer picture of why Cousins and Jones have entered the conversation. Cousins has completed 180 passes for 2,124 yards and 19 touchdowns with five interceptions this season.

His yards per attempt sit higher than Murray’s, and the volume of big plays has been noticeably greater.

Jones, appearing in eight games, has 162 completions, 1,542 passing yards, the same number of touchdowns as Murray, and nine interceptions, though he has been sacked 22 times.

Neither profile is flawless, yet both represent experienced alternatives already producing at a higher statistical level in key categories.

Any deal would carry cost and complications. Cousins, a former Viking, would require a trade with a division rival, and his current contract situation could complicate matters.

Jones would also demand meaningful compensation, and his sack and interception totals show the risks that come with the package.

Minnesota’s strong record reduces the urgency for a blockbuster move, yet the public mention of both Cousins and Jones as realistic options shows how seriously the organization is treating the quarterback question heading into the deadline.

The next several days will reveal whether those names remain rumors or become the center of an actual transaction.
