Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras reached a career landmark that few catchers ever touch, and he did it in the middle of a heated National League Central series.
During Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, the Brewers star drove a two-run homer that stretched the lead to 6-0 and pushed his career total to exactly 100 home runs.
The Brewers made a point of celebrating the moment, announcing the milestone on social media. And for good reason. A century of home runs is a rare mark for a player who spends most of his nights behind the plate.
Contreras, now 28, has spent seven seasons in the majors after debuting with the Atlanta Braves in 2020. He arrived in Milwaukee in a December 2022 trade and quickly became one of the club’s most reliable offensive pieces.
In four seasons with the Brewers, he has already collected two All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger awards, and a fifth-place finish in National League MVP voting in 2024.
His work with Milwaukee accounts for the bulk of his power production: 72 of those 100 homers have come in a Brewers uniform, along with 128 doubles and 322 RBI across 580 games and a .275 average.
The timing of the 100th homer fits a recent uptick. Contreras has gone deep twice in his last four games after a stretch in which extra-base hits were harder to come by.
That kind of late-season surge matters for a Brewers team that has spent much of 2026 near the top of the division. A catcher who can still drive the ball while handling a pitching staff remains one of the more valuable profiles in the sport, and Contreras has shown he can do both even after playing through a fractured finger for much of 2025.
His path to 100 was not linear. After a 20-homer season in Atlanta in 2022, he settled into a more consistent, high-contact approach in Milwaukee.
The 23-homer, 92-RBI campaign in 2024 remains his peak, but the steady production since then has added up. Career numbers now sit at a .272 average, 390 RBI, and three All-Star nods, including 2026.
He also owns a World Series ring from Atlanta’s 2021 title, though his postseason opportunities with Milwaukee have been limited.
Reaching 100 home runs does not change what Contreras is asked to do every day. He still has to call games, throw out runners, and stay durable through a long season.
What it does confirm is that the Venezuelan catcher has become more than a complementary piece.
For a franchise that has built its recent success around pitching and timely hitting, having a backstop who can change a game with one swing is a luxury few teams enjoy. The ball that left the park on Wednesday simply made that fact official.
