The Minnesota Vikings have formally recognized the players their locker room trusts most, naming eight season-long captains for 2026 after a team-wide vote heading into their season opener against the Green Bay Packers this Sunday.
The most notable addition is quarterback Kyler Murray, who will wear the “C” in his first year in purple after seven seasons in Arizona.
Murray arrived in March on a one-year contract and won the starting job over 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy before the preseason even began. Teammates still chose him as an offensive captain alongside returnees Justin Jefferson, Aaron Jones Sr., and Brian O’Neill.
For Murray, the honor is familiar: he served as a Cardinals captain every year from 2020 through 2025. In Minnesota it carries extra weight. He is still learning a new offense and a new building, yet the vote signals that his presence, preparation, and accountability already registered with the group.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell has described him as competitive and self-critical rather than a vocal cheerleader, the kind of leader who earns the patch by how he works rather than how loudly he talks.
The rest of the captain group mixes continuity and change. Jefferson remains the face of the franchise. O’Neill is entering another year as a steady presence on the offensive line. Jones, now listed as Aaron Jones Sr., continues to set the tone in the backfield.
On defense, safety Joshua Metellus returns as a vocal leader, while linebackers Blake Cashman and Andrew Van Ginkel receive the designation for the first time in Minnesota as they begin their third seasons with the club. Long snapper Andrew DePaola again represents special teams, extending a run of consistency that has made him a Pro Bowl and All-Pro regular.
Cashman and Van Ginkel replace departed leaders Jonathan Greenard and Harrison Smith. Murray, in turn, steps into the quarterback captain spot previously held by McCarthy.
A photo of the eight will join the Jim Marshall Vikings Captains Legacy display, a reminder that the honor is both personal and institutional. Marshall captained the franchise through its first two decades; the current group now inherits that standard as the 2026 season opens.
For Murray, the captaincy is less a coronation than a working assignment. He has yet to take a regular-season snap for Minnesota, and last year in Arizona a foot injury limited him to five starts.
The vote suggests teammates already see him as someone who can organize the huddle and absorb responsibility when things go wrong.
Whether that leadership translates on Sundays will be measured against the Packers and the rest of the NFC North.
For now, the message from the locker room is clear: the new quarterback is not just the starter. He is one of the eight players the rest of the roster chose to follow.
