Dianna Russini, once one of the NFL’s most plugged-in reporters, is preparing a return to sports media after a turbulent spring that ended her time at The Athletic.
Photos that surfaced in April 2026 showed Russini at an Arizona resort holding hands and embracing New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Both were married to other people at the time.
The Athletic opened an investigation into the relationship. Russini resigned before that review officially concluded.
The outlet later determined her undisclosed relationship with Vrabel violated company policy. Investigators found no evidence of bias or factual errors in her reporting.
About five months have passed. Russini is now considering several job offers as she looks to restart her career.
The NFL regular season has begun, and those close to the situation expect her to choose a destination soon.
Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports reported that one outlet has pulled ahead of the pack.
“The lead candidate to hire Russini, I’m hearing, is Dave Portnoy’s Barstool Sports,” McCarthy wrote. “She’s friends with the company’s two biggest on-air talents: Pardon My Take hosts Dan ‘Big Cat’ Katz and PFT Commenter. She appeared frequently on their pod. The Jersey native has the kind of funny, entertaining personality that meshes with Barstool’s irreverent approach.”
Portnoy has publicly downplayed the earlier controversy.
“That’s not like a capital offense that should end somebody’s professional career,” he said of Russini’s controversy involving Vrabel.
Barstool Sports has long built its brand around outspoken personalities who operate outside traditional media guardrails. That environment appears to suit Russini’s public style.
She spent years as a well-connected NFL insider before the Vrabel episode. The same episode also made clear she was willing to operate outside standard disclosure rules.
Barstool tends to reward authenticity, even when it arrives with messiness attached. Russini already brings name recognition, league contacts and public curiosity about her next chapter.
A looser, personality-driven format could give her room to rebuild an audience that looks different from the one she reached at The Athletic.
