Aaron Rodgers left little room for debate this week that the 2026 season will be his last in the NFL.
The Steelers quarterback, speaking with Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio, was asked what he hoped to be doing this time next year.
“I’m hopefully gonna be supporting my pregnant wife, because we’re gonna start a family,” Rodgers said. “And I am not gonna be making a lot of appearances or statements, and I’m looking forward to a life of quiet after 23 years in the pros and three in college.”
Those words carried more weight than a typical radio answer. Rodgers had already described this year as his farewell campaign, yet veteran stars often keep one more season in reserve.
This time he sounded finished.
Rodgers turns 43 in December. He still has the arm and the film-study habits to play beyond this fall if he wanted. He has chosen not to.
He and his wife have kept her name out of public view, a decision that matches the quieter life he now describes. Once the season ends they plan to start a family.
Rodgers made it plain he will skip the usual circuit of appearances and comments that often follow a high-profile exit.
The Steelers are in their first year without Mike Tomlin. Mike McCarthy, 62, is now the head coach.
McCarthy coached Rodgers during the Green Bay years and has returned to the sideline after time away. He is also coaching the team he followed as a boy.
Because Rodgers never spent his prime in Pittsburgh, this season will not feel like a classic farewell tour. The organization and its fans will measure success by wins, not nostalgia.
An ESPN projection has the Steelers at 8.6 victories. Nine or 10 wins would likely put them in the Wild Card mix. Pittsburgh has not finished with a losing record since 2003.
Two young quarterbacks, Will Howard and Drew Allar, sit behind Rodgers and are expected to compete for the starting job in 2027.
With retirement apparently settled, Rodgers no longer has to treat those backups as rivals. He can spend the year teaching instead of protecting his roster spot.
That mentoring work may also serve as early practice for fatherhood.
Receiver injuries have already stacked up in training camp, giving McCarthy and Rodgers another problem to solve while they try to keep the team in contention.
After 23 professional seasons and three more in college, Rodgers said he simply wants quiet. For a quarterback who has lived under constant attention, that may be the most direct retirement announcement he ever makes.
