The Atlanta Falcons made official what teammates have been saying for months: Bijan Robinson is not only the face of the offense, he is one of the voices that will represent the locker room in 2026.
Voted a team captain for the first time in his career (per a team announcement), the star running back joins guard Chris Lindstrom, safety Jessie Bates III, linebacker Divine Deablo and kicker Nick Folk as the five players who will wear the “C” this season.
The choice landed with particular weight because of who was left off the list. Neither Tua Tagovailoa nor Michael Penix Jr. received the honor while Atlanta’s quarterback job remains unresolved.
Tagovailoa signed a one-year deal after his release from Miami and entered camp as the more experienced option, but reports later suggested his early lead had slipped as Penix returned from a torn ACL.
With Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers approaching and no starter publicly locked in, the Falcons leaned on established voices at other positions instead of attaching the captain’s patch to an unsettled quarterback room.
Robinson’s selection was the least surprising part of the announcement. The former first-round pick has become the franchise’s most reliable star, a dual-threat back who recently signed a market-resetting extension that keeps him in Atlanta through 2030.
At 24, he is the youngest captain the team has named since A.J. Terrell in 2022, yet teammates describe a player who used even the brief hold-in at the start of camp as a chance to lead from the sideline.
That combination of production and presence made him the natural offensive counterpart to Lindstrom, a three-time captain, and Bates, now a four-time honoree since arriving in 2023. Deablo and Folk are first-timers as well, rounding out a group that spans the offensive line, the secondary, the linebacker corps and special teams.
The vote also marks a clean break from last year’s leadership slate. Penix was among the 2025 captains; this year the organization is starting fresh under new head coach Kevin Stefanski. Robinson’s elevation is the clearest signal of that reset. The Falcons have already committed long-term money to him,
Drake London and Kyle Pitts. Naming him a captain formalizes what the contract already implied: Atlanta’s identity on offense will run through the backfield until the quarterback picture settles.
For Robinson, the patch is less a coronation than a job description. Captains walk out for the coin toss, speak for the locker room when the season turns messy, and set the tone when a young roster still needs direction.
The Falcons open in Pittsburgh next Sunday with questions at quarterback and a new coaching staff still installing its system. In that environment, putting the team’s best player and most visible young leader in the captain’s circle is both a statement of confidence and a practical choice.
Robinson has the production. Now he has the title that matches it.
