The Philadelphia Phillies open a four-game set against the Atlanta Braves with more than just another weekend series on the line.
First place in the National League East is within reach, and a strong showing against their division rival would tighten the race at a point in the season when every win carries extra weight.
The club posted its lineup for Friday’s opener, and the most notable detail involves Kyle Schwarber.
The slugging designated hitter will bat first again, a role he has filled often this year, but he will do so as the DH rather than in the field. In the Phillies’ most recent game he started at first base; manager Don Mattingly is shifting him back behind the plate-less defensive assignment for the Atlanta series.
The rest of the order has Trea Turner at shortstop, Bryce Harper in right field, Luis Arraez at second, Alec Bohm at first, Edmundo Sosa in left, Bryson Stott at third, J.T. Realmuto catching, and Derek Hill in center.
Schwarber arrives at the series looking for a reset. He finished the last game 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, a quiet night for a player whose value is built on extra-base damage.
The 33-year-old has also posted an OPS below .800 in each of the last two months.
Even so, Schwarber’s season remains one of the more productive in the league. He leads the majors with 40 home runs to go along with 83 RBI, keep him among the most dangerous middle-of-the-order threats in baseball. A leadoff role that lets him see early pitches only increases the chance he changes a game with one swing.
The Braves present a familiar and difficult test. Philadelphia has spent the year trading blows with Atlanta in the standings, and a four-game stretch offers a chance to seize momentum rather than merely stay close. Schwarber’s presence at the top of the order is designed to set that tone immediately.
Whether he stays in the DH slot throughout the series or returns to first base later will depend on matchups and rest, but Friday’s plan is clear: get the left-handed power threat into the box as often as possible and let the rest of a deep lineup work behind him.
For a Phillies team that has leaned on Schwarber’s production all season, the hope is that one quiet night does not become two. A bounce-back performance against Atlanta would do more than pad his already impressive totals.
