The Philadelphia Eagles have added another running back with NFC East history, signing former Dallas Cowboys fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue to the practice squad after Dallas waived him in final roster cuts.
Blue, 22, was taken 149th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Texas. He is listed at 5-foot-9 and 198 pounds and ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash at the combine, one of the fastest times among running backs that year.
In his lone season with Dallas he appeared in five games, rushing 38 times for 129 yards and one touchdown, with one catch for five yards and three kickoff returns for 72 yards.
He was a frequent healthy scratch as a rookie and did not lock down a backup role this summer behind Javonte Williams.
Dallas released him on Aug. 30. He cleared waivers, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the next day that Philadelphia was bringing him in. The Eagles had already taken a long look at Blue before the 2025 draft, including a top-30 visit, so the fit was not a last-minute idea.
He officially joined the 17-man practice squad as the team finished those moves.
Philadelphia is stacked at the position. Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, and Will Shipley made the 53-man roster. Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele were already on the practice squad, making Blue a third developmental option.
What he offers is different: speed, receiving skills from his Texas days (42 catches and six receiving touchdowns in 2024), and some return experience. In the 2026 preseason with Dallas he ran 23 times for 94 yards, including 75 yards on 15 carries against Arizona.
The move is low-risk depth more than a statement signing. Blue would likely need injuries or special-teams value to be elevated.
There is also a longer-term angle: Bigsby is a pending free agent after this season, and a year on the scout team could help Blue grow into a more complete pro after reports that maturity issues limited him in Dallas. Blue has acknowledged he was not fully ready as a rookie.
For Eagles fans, it is another Howie Roseman flier on a young player the front office liked coming out of college. For Cowboys fans, it is a fifth-round pick landing with a division rival a day after being cut.
Blue stays in the NFC East, just in midnight green instead of silver and blue, trying to turn a short Dallas stay into a second chance in Philadelphia.
